“Keep in touch. You’ve got our numbers. And if you change your mind about joining up…”
“Thanks,” I said, putting up my best good-natured smile before exiting the vehicle. I paused on the stoop and turned back to wave to the couple, saying goodbye to the last chance I had at ditching my desk job and joining something that fulfilled my soul. Before I could rush back down the sidewalk and throw myself into the vehicle again, screaming “Take me with you!”, they were pulling away from the curb and heading down the street. And it was for the best, anyway. I wouldn’t be able to hack it in a life like theirs.
But if I was so sure of that, why, then, was I so miserable?
With a sigh, I headed inside. I had to work in the morning, after all.
