Alexander's voice was low, almost a growl, as he spoke. "Why are you acting like this?" His eyes raked over her body, taking in every detail.
The evidence of her injury was clearer now, the shadows under her eyes, the way she held herself carefully, avoiding any sudden movements. "What happened to you?" he asked, his voice softer now, a hint of worry bleeding through his cold facade. He couldn't deny his concern for her, despite his attempts to stay detached.
Amber's voice was strained as she answered, a hint of defensiveness creeping in. "It's nothing," she replied, her eyes darting away from his gaze.
"Just a cold, that's all." She tried to sound flippant, like it was no big deal, but the tension in her body betrayed her. She knew he wouldn't believe her, not completely. And deep inside, she yearned to tell him the truth, to let someone in.
