Death

"Sierra six divisions two and four, get in position and be sure to encircle the target."

"Copy that commander."

"Remember, this is mortem we're dealing with, I want extreme caution to be taken and DO NOT open fire until I say so, got it? "

"In position commander, awaiting your orders."

"Alright then I'm moving in, be sure to cover me."

Figures could then be seen, clad in all black tactical gear slowly approaching what could only be described as a magnificent home hidden deep in the woods in the middle of nowhere. The approaching figures where only unseen using the cover of the night and the sounds of the nightlife creatures to blend in.

Meanwhile, in that same house, a conversation was going on between a tall but slender man, his dark skin illuminated by the lights, and features of an elderly but chislelled face-indicators of a rough life and whoever was on the other line of the wireless device in his ear.

"Remember Berlin all those years ago?" A soft feminine voice could be heard on the other side apparently reminiscing on old memories of a different life.

"How could I forget anna, you were only a neophyte and nearly got me killed. Now look at you now, one of the best handlers on the field." The man responded, happiness observed in his gruff and heavy voice.

"Ahh Mortem, you know you never actually told me your real name did you?"

"And I'm guessing you want to know it before the ones downstairs get me right?"

And suddenly... silence ensued.

"So, you knew the entire time, and you actually entertained this conversation." Anna could only give a wry smile, like a child who had been caught committing an offence. "Even after so many years I still don't know anything about you. "

"That's part of the charm isn't it?" Mortem said with a smile, visible only to those keeping watch, thousands of meters away.

"You know," Anna began, her voice beginning to crack, showing certain emotions that Mortem had not observed from her in a very long time. "I never wanted to do this mort, but I had no choice."

"I know Anna, that's just how things are for people like us. I've always known I was expendable, in fact, it's a miracle I've lived this long, everyone who got enlisted same time as me are all six feet below. "

"But sti-"

"No buts Anna, I'm already pushing 60, even if I escape now, sooner or later I'll be caught." Pausing as if to catch a breath, Mortem pulled out another device and began inputting some numbers into it. "Now, what did I always tell you?"

With a defeated sigh Anna answered, "Always put yourself first before anyone else."

"Good, that's the only way you'll ever achieve your goals."

"Good bye mortem."

Wit barely a whisper, Mortem replied, "It's Krieger."

"Wha-"

And just like that, Mortem cut the line.

Standing still in the barely illuminated room, Mortem waited in silence for a few moments before breaking the silence, "Aren't you going to join me for a drink? It's my last you know? Why not fulfil a dying man's last wish?"

"You didn't fulfil my father's did you?" Out of the shadows, a figure walked out and stood only a few feet away from Mortem, the curves in the all black tactical gear revealing her feminine status.

"Oh, and who might you be?" Mortem asked, clearly bored of this predictable plot as it was only a few weeks ago another one of his past target's loved ones was left with a head filled with lead after their encounter.

Pulling down her mask to reveal a striking woman with long black hair and excitement written in her eyes in anticipation of her revenge, the woman looked at Mortem without saying a word.

"Am I supposed to remember who you are?"

Gritting her teeth, the woman replied, "I'm Cortana Streville, daughter of Roman Streville. You killed my father 13 years ago for trying to support his family."

"Yeah, I'm sorry I have no clue as to who you or your father are. I'm an assassin okay, I just kill whoever I'm asked to kill. "

"You made us HOMELESS! And you say you DON'T CARE? You're even more evil than I thought and I swear to you I'm going to make sure I enjoy each and every last moment before I finally send you to your eternal damnation." Cortana was livid at this moment, knowing that the revenge she had been dreaming about for most of her life actually meant nothing to the subject of her nightmares for the past decade, was enough to decide to take her time.

With an incredulous look, as if solving the most complicated equation to exist, Mortem could only stare for a few moments before replying, "So let me get this straight, in order to have your revenge on me a 'bad guy' who kills without regard, you decided to take an occupation where you kill without regard all in the name of... revenge?"

"It's different okay! I only did it so that I could punish people who were truly bad like you! and unlike you, I actually read the reports, so I know exactly the type of people who I kill are!"

'Ahh, another 'soldier of justice' that old hag was able to manipulate into becoming a mindless killer. Well I guess she was always bound to die early so this should be fun.'

"Sorry kiddo, but I'm afraid both of us are the same."

"WE ARE N-" Cortana was about to be refuted before being cut off.

"It's poetic don't you think? father and daughter dying to the same man?"

At this point it didn't take a genius to understand that things were about to go very wrong for whoever wasn't Mortem.

"ALL UNITS EVACUA-"

"Goodbye Anna."

And that was it, the death of one of the world's best assassins and utter eradication of the surrounding ecosystem to the bomb that went off. The only winners? The ones who sent them all to die in the first place.
