Infinite Helix

Natovis, better known as the Layered City, has seen better days. The upper layers are still intact and still governed by the authorities, but they are nothing compared to what they used to be. No one knows what goes on past the 8th floor down from the top. It is estimated that there could be thousands of floors. Things are so far declined that much of history and science is forgotten. People turn instead to speculation, legend, and outright guessing to explain the world and universe. Most do not even know how the city got there. There is a series of mysterious and unexplained disappearances, none of which have any evidence, except for one. The insolvency to fixing this problem shines light onto the civilizations decline. The public, led by some extraordinary individuals take action to both solve the mystery, and turn things around.

Layer ????

Water dripped. Down below, upon a far beneath level, deep into the Layered City sat Brother Patrich Radnivspecs. He sat in his throne made of stone. He could certainly afford to have a Throne of a Precious metal or gemstone, but this large chair was used by his ancestors from thousands of years ago even before they had moved to Natovis.

This layer of Natovis had not been seen for centuries by anyone living in the upper levels, aside from the occasional unlucky wonderer that found themselves down there, and the occasional confidential diplomat sent by the authorities.

Like all of the levels that lay below the eight upper floors, the authorities had no jurisdiction over the layer.

Brother Radnivspecs pounded his large fist on the arm of his chair yelling to his servant "Kevilnecs, I am thirsty, get me a drink!" Kevilnecs scrambled to leave the room and go prepare the leader's favorite drink.

Radnivspecs was the top religious leader of the infamous Covenant of the Falling Comet. He effectively was also the king of this floor. Though he was brutal, to his credit, unlike the authorities of the upper floors, Radnivspecs had an excellent hold on his domain.

Radnivspecs waited for his drink. He thought to himself "Kevilnecs is taking even longer than usual, where could he be!". He got bored and decided he would punish his servant later. He got up, stretched a little and listened to some of the public broadcasting from the upper layers. Just as it had been on today's broadcast, the story of the "curfew mist" had been all over the news the past week. He did not think much of it as it did not affect them on the lower levels.

Radnivspecs then went to attend his weekly meeting with his druids, the top administrators of this layer of Natovis. Most of the things discussed on the meeting were just issues that came with daily governance, nothing too interesting.

He headed back to his castle and sat back down on his throne to rest. Kevilnecs came in with the drink Radnivspecs had demanded earlier this morning. The servant timidly brought the drink over on a tray. The leader picked up the glass, took a sip and said "Ah, Kevilnecs you have done it again! You make the finest Two Moon cocktail in the realm!" He took another sip.

Strangely, despite Radnivspecs known brutality, he never seemed to actually punish his servant. He always said he would, but he never did.

Kevilnecs was a slow and lazy servant, yet the leader had kept him all of these years. It probably had to do with a mixture of Kevilnecs being the servant of one of the king's ancestors, and Kevilnecs being extremely loyal, not saying word about any of the scandals his king may or may not have been a part of.

Radnivspecs then realized he had not caught up with his good "friend" in a while. He walked to the prison, not too far away from where he resided.

Once inside, Brother Patrich Radnivspecs walked down a long, but narrow hallway with pairs of doors facing each other about every 20 feet. There were dim flickering lights evenly spaced in between each of those, as far as one could see...
