Chapter 53

“Because you need help, and I’m here and willing.”

“Which didn’t answer the question,” Ryan replied with a brief smile.

Shaun shrugged. “I think you’re good people, from what I can tell, like the lady who owns the boarding house. Deal.” He put the jacket on and got out of the car.

When he entered the gallery, he stopped, looking at the drawings on display. There was what he presumed was a connected series of them on the wall opposite him. They depicted mythical monsters—ink drawings overlaying autumn leaves. If these are Ryan’s, and they must be, he’s damned good.

“May I help you?”

Shaun turned to the man who had asked. “I’m looking for Mr. Foster.”

“That would be me.”

“I’m here to pick up the money you owe Ryan Westley.”

“Pardon me? In the first place, the only one authorized to do that is his agent.”

Shaun had the distinct feeling the ‘agent’ was Ryan’s ex, so he replied, “Mr. Westley has severed his ties with him.”
