Ryan is a young artist hoping to make a name for himself. When he meets a man who offers to help him advance his career, he accepts. His career takes off when Merrick arranges two shows for Ryan at a local gallery. Ryan is elated, especially when their relationship becomes more personal. What he doesn’t expect is to end up being abused, physically and emotionally, as Merrick tightens his control over the younger artist.<br><br>After a vicious beating, Ryan manages to escape, naked except for a bedspread wrapped around himself. Policeman Shaun Levitt finds him cowering in an alley. Chapter 29

“I didn’t say that, Merrick,” Ryan replied, grasping Merrick’s hands. “I think I do.”

“But not enough to share my life, and my home.”

Taking a deep breath, Ryan said, “I’m willing to try. If it doesn’t work out…” He tightened his grip on Merrick’s hands. “If it doesn’t, then I’ll leave. I’ll regret it, because I want it to work, but sometimes we don’t get what we wish for.”

And sometimes, we do. Merrick kept his expression serious; hiding the triumphant knowledge he had finally won. All his hard work and planning had gotten him what he so desperately desired—Ryan. “All I’m asking is that we try.” He pulled one hand free, cupping it behind Ryan’s head, leaning forward to kiss him softly. “I know it will work. How can it not? I’ll do my utmost to erase any lingering doubts you might have.”

Ryan traced one finger over Merrick’s lips, sending a frisson of desire coursing through Merrick’s body. He resisted responding, aware now was not the time.
