Chapter 25

“You got a lot done today,” Merrick commented once they were seated.

“More than I’d planned on,” Ryan admitted. “It was like I got started and didn’t want to stop until I added one more stone, and then the next, and…Well, you get the picture.”

“I do. You’re a dedicated worker, but then I knew you would be.”

“Thanks.” Ryan began eating, then realized Merrick was still looking at him. “What, did I miss a spot of dirt?”

“No. You amaze me. You seem to be good at everything you tackle.”

Ryan looked away, feeling his face heat up at Merrick’s praise. “I just do the best I can,” he protested.

“Ryan, what have told you, more than once?”

“Not to belittle myself.”

“Exactly.” Merrick took his hand. “Believe in yourself. You’re worth it.”

“I’m trying.” Ryan laced his fingers with Merrick’s. “You make it easier to.”

“Good.” Merrick pulled his hand back, smiling as he said, “We’d better finish our meal before it gets cold.”
