Alex, I'm sorry!

Alex's POV

Each day, Ken and I find ourselves embroiled in disputes over Patrick's frequent visits to our home. Every single day, I witness them engaging in animated conversations, bonding like a father and son should. It's becoming increasingly apparent that Kent has developed a stronger connection with Patrick than with me, likely because of their biological father-son relationship. Deep down, I understand that this is Ken's greatest fear.

I set down the snacks on the terrace while Patrick and Kent happily chatted away. I was about to leave when Patrick grabbed my hand.

"Join us," he smiled.

"Yeah! Mom, join us," Kent said happily. "Here! Sit!" My son offered me his chair. "I'll just go to the bathroom, Mommy," he said to me, leaving Patrick and me alone.

The atmosphere becomes palpably awkward in moments like these. However, Patrick skillfully breaks through the tension with his words.

"How are you?" he asked with a smile.

"I'm okay," I replied curtly.
