The Three Fortunes (Part-1)

Eugene couldn't interact with anyone in this world as he was only a spectator who could only watch the characters play out their roles but do nothing to stop them from doing what they wished to do, so he failed to stop V. Samuel from taking down Allen.

Because V. Samuel had put Allen behind bars, at the end of the second expansion of the game, Allen had kidnapped him and tortured him to death.

By the time the protagonist came to his help, V. Samuel was no more than scattered pieces of flesh pinned to a melting metallic wall.

Seeing that angered the protagonist so much that he disgraced and killed Allen.

Unluckily, Eugene remained unheard by V. Samuel from the moment he appeared in this world to the very end. Otherwise, he would've done everything in his power to stop him from interacting with the bastard called Allen.

He also noticed his ghost-like intangible body overlapping with V. Samuel. The smile on his face disappeared as his body started to vanish. His jaw dropped as his body turned to specks of lights that became one with the body of the person with the same first name as him. At the same time, a monotone prompt sounded in his mind.

[You've witnessed all the memories present in Eugene V. Samuel's soul shards.]

[The illusory world will now close.]

He blanked out, and by the time he regained his senses, he was no longer in the world made of V. Samuel's memories.

Eugene felt like he had been dreaming after he vanished from the world he had been in for many years and found himself in the hidden realm between the afterlife and the cycle of reincarnation.

The black-haired God of Death, who stood in front, was quietly observing him.

[Ding! Your soul has successfully absorbed all of V. Samuel's soul shards.]

[Your soul's size has increased by a large margin as it has digested V. Samuel's soul shards.]

Immediately, Eugene felt a warm current coursing throughout his body before helping him open his mental energy storage located next to his heart and forming barely visible patterns in the center of his eyes.

[Your mental energy has increased by 99 units.]

[You've gained the skill, Misfortune Seeing eyes.]

[You've gained the skill, Fortune Seeing eyes.]

[You've gained the skill, Fortified mentality.]

Prompts explaining the effect of the skills that Eugene has made his own popped up in front of him.

The misfortune of seeing eyes allowed its possessor to see its and others' misfortune.

The Fortune seeing eyes did the same, but instead of seeing misfortune, one would see one's own or others' fortune in various shapes.

He skipped the first two as he knew what they did.

He focused his gaze on the last one.

[Fortified Mentality:- Your mentality has strengthened after witnessing traumatic events. You won't lose your mind during battle. You'll always be calm in situations that are tense for humans. As you survive through dangerous situations, the proficiency of this skill will increase. The higher your mastery of this skill, the greater the chance of it involving into a higher-level skill.]

[Skill Proficiency: 1/10]

[Skill Type: Passive]

Eugene smiled.

"Is this skill to your liking?"

The God of Death helped him stand up to his feet.

"Yeah, that's what any law-abiding citizen from modern earth would like to have before heading into a world where death is as common as bread."

This skill was worthless to killers, soldiers, assassins, and the like.

But to Eugene, who had never even butchered a chicken, this skill was the best thing he could ask for before stepping into the soon-to-crumble world.

"I see." The face of Eugene seemed to reflect in the God of Death's eyes for a moment. "I think you're troubled by a few thoughts. If you wish to have your question's answered, now is the time to lay them out to me."

"I do have a question for you." Eugene said, "May I ask?

The God of death nodded toward him. "Go ahead and say it."

"The events I witnessed in the dream-like world have already happened?"

Eugene really wished that it hadn't, but if it had, he would've no choice but to prepare himself to face Allen in the future.

"Yes, Eugene V. Samuel has been through everything you just witnessed."

"Ah, shit."

Eugene's worst fear had come true, yet he couldn't turn back time to refuse God's offer.

He only had one way to survive the tragic fate Allen would bestow upon him in the future, and that was to become stronger than Allen!

"How much time has passed since I started integrating with the shards of his soul?"

Eugene questioned God, who, in response, raised but a finger.

"Ten years?"

"No, only a split of a second."

Eugene clearly didn't expect such a response from the God of Death, and his eyes widened to the size of saucers.

"What?! I feel a dozen years older, yet not even a second has passed since I started absorbing his memories. How is that possible?" Eugene spat out in surprise.

The God of Death pressed his lips into a thin smile. "Don't be surprised, child. The time in the illusory world is different from this space. Many decades there is but a moment here."

Eugene had heard that godly beings were able to summon wind and rain as they liked, but he was still surprised to find out that the God of Death was able to play with time as he liked.

He felt a bit terrified of the one calling himself the Lord of Infinity and the God of Death.

"Anyway, what's this voice in my head? Do you have anything to do with it?"

Eugene tapped his head in annoyance while saying that.

The God of Death's eyes that narrowed into a crescent moon smile told Eugene that it was him who had put the mysterious voice into his head.

"It's the blessing I've granted you as soon as I pulled your soul into my realm."

Eugene's mouth widened to a complete circle.
