29 Adventurer by surprise

The inside of the building looked exactly the way I imagined an Adventurer's Guild would look like: a large room packed with noisy, rough-looking men. On the wall to my right, I could see a huge panel filled with papers hanging from it, and a lot of people standing in front of it. There was no doubt that those papers were the Guild Missions.

—We have just stepped into the most dangerous place we could ever find ourselves in… Stay close to Aeldrya no matter what.

We followed the elf all the way to the far end of the room, where we reached a counter with 3 clerks. The one who greeted Aeldrya was a rather ugly fat man... I was hoping for a good-looking cat girl, but alas, all we got was a fat man.

"Hi, Aeldrya, how did it go?" The fat man greeted the elf.

"Hello, Clotpole. Well, it did not go so great this time. I found the kidnapper's whereabouts, but when I arrived there, he had already vanished. We will have to keep looking.”

"I see. Well, good luck with that."

'Yeah, you’re going to need more than just luck. Limy doesn't need to go to the toilet, so there’s no chance you will ever find a shit of the guy.’

“At least I could set the kids free."

"Speaking of kids, who's this little girl? She looks a little strange."

"I found her while I was looking for the kidnapper. She is one of the kids he was holding captive. Since she has nowhere to go, I took her under my wing for the time being."

"I see, but I don't think it's a good idea to bring a little child into the Adventurer's Guild. Unless... Do you intend for her to follow in your footsteps and become an adventurer like you?"

"No way. I just didn't want to leave her alone until I had found someone she could stay with."

"Can adventurers be eaten?" Limy joined the conversation.

Everyone turned to look at Limy, as if she had asked the most stupid question in the world... The sad part about it is that she had asked earnestly, and she probably would not mind eating an adventurer or two...

It wouldn’t have been so bad if it was just Clotpole and Aeldrya who started stared at Limy in disbelief. However, everyone that had heard what Limy just said also was now also staring at her. And they did not seem particularly pleased.

"Girl, are you stupid?"

“This is no place for little kids!”

"Go eat shit!"

"Everybody shut the hell up! What’s wrong with you people, she’s just a little girl!" Aeldrya yelled.

After witnessing the elf’s outburst, everyone fell silent and started slowly walking away, their eyes showing a hint of fear. Aeldrya really seemed to be top dog among the adventurers.

"Limy, adventurers are not some type of food, they are brave people who strive to fulfil dangerous assignments of all kinds. You could consider them to be a kind of mercenary group that focuses on dealing with monsters and dangerous quests, rather than fighting in wars."

“So, they are indeed food,” Limy stated.

“They are not!” Both, the elf and the fat guy yelled at her in unison.

“Ha, ha, ha, you have found quite the peculiar child. Listen little girl, do you want to become an adventurer?” The guy asked Limy.

“Ok.” She agreed instantly, without giving it any kind of thought.

—Not ok! Are you crazy? You are a slime. A slime becoming an adventurer is unheard of, and for good reason!

—But…

“No way!”

Luckily, Aeldrya had a similar opinion.

"Besides, you're too young. One cannot become an adventurer until they are at least 16 years old. Right, Clotpole? Why would you ask her that?"

"Well, that's true... but if she were to be in your care, she could at least start as an apprentice. After all, you are a rank 3 adventurer, which means you are allowed to have apprentices."

"Ugh, I knew I shouldn't have brought her here… Still…"

Aeldrya stared silently at Limy with a furrowed brow for a long time. In the end, she let out a long sigh and loosened up her body, which had been quite tense up until that point.

"Alright, fine. Truth be told, you remind me so much of myself when I first arrived at this country... I guess it wouldn’t be such a bad idea, but don’t think I will go easy on you!"

—See master? It is fine.

—One day you're going to give me a heart attack...

I sighed, although in the end I couldn't refuse either. After all, what I really wanted was to become an adventurer myself... I was jealous of her!

“Congratulations girl, you have become the apprentice of the sixth best adventurer of the Guild.”

"You’re exaggerating. My level is only 23, there are several other rank 3 adventurers whose level is higher than mine. Not to mention a certain pair of rank 4 monsters..."

"True, your level is only 23, but that would be like level 46 or higher for a human. It cannot even be compared."

"Precisely my point. The mere fact that despite being human they reached the same rank as me shows that they are better." Aeldrya said with a melancholic smile.

"Saying these kinds of things will only make people dislike you even more than they already do… Well, let's focus on this girl. Let's see, her name is Limy. Kind, human... You’re human, right?" Clotpole changed the topic.

“Sli…”

—Human! Human! Human, damn it!

“Human, damn it!”

—Just human!

"Okay, okay, don't be mad. And what about your race? You can’t possibly be from Brifvia with that blue hair, right?"

“Yes, I’m Brifvian.”

Both the elf and the man were surprised to hear that, but at least I managed to prevent Limy from saying "Blue slime". Brifvian was perhaps not the best answer, but I didn't know any other human races... Luckily, they did not seem too concerned about it.

"… It seems that you are a really special person. Well, let's find out your affinities and what classes are available to you."

The next thing Clotpole did was to take out two strange gadgets. The first was a circle filled with different coloured gems. Limy put her hand in the middle and waited to see what happened… which was nothing at all.

"Is it broken?" Aeldrya asked as she placed her hand on the device.

When she did, the green, blue, and grey gems lit up.

"No, it works fine ... However, this means you don’t have any affinities. This is a very rare occurrence, although not unheard of.” Said the man as he put the gadget away.

‘So, one person can have multiple affinities… I would have liked to try that thing myself…’

The next device he brought out was some kind of crystal sphere, similar to those used in divination and fortune telling. Same routine as before, Limy put her hand on top of the glass and waited… yet, once again, nothing happened.

"Hmm, it seems that there are no classes available for you yet... It's a shame, but there’s nothing we can do for the time being. One last thing, what is your level?" The man asked her.

"Two."

"Let's hope that reaching level 5 will unlock some classes for you, although ordinarily you should already have some options available at level 2…”
