Power System Class
I was going to incorporate this exposition in a chapter from the perspective of an academy class, but then thought it would be wordy and unnecessary, so simply decided to keep all that stuff here.
In The Continent, mages are divided by mana capacity and mana proficiency:
Mana Capacity is required for casting more powerful and large-scale spells. This can be trained, however, for most people, there is a limit to how much they can grow in this regard. The divisions are:
1st Circle - Acolyte
2nd Circle - Beginner
3rd Circle - Adept
4th Circle - Master
5th Circle - Grandmaster
6th Circle - Magus
7th Circle - Grand Magus
8th Circle - Arch Magus
9th Circle - ???
???
Mana Proficiency contain all the aspects related to how skillfully mana is utilized. The efficiency of a cast, and how long certain spells take to cast fall under this category. This can be honed with time and effort, however, some are naturally more gifted in this aspect than others. The divisions are:
Crude
Skilled
Refined
Void
Domain
Limitless

Therefore, the prowess of a mage can be described by [Mage Proficiency] + [Mana Capacity], e.g.
A Void Master or a Refined Grand Magus.
Warriors are those who use mana in conjunction with their physical capabilities in order to exert 'Force'. Force utilization is an accurate measure of how powerful and how skilled a warrior is. The Divisions are the same as that of Mana Proficiency.

Enchanting is a branch of craftsmanship that utilizes the forms of spells upon a physical item, granting it desirable properties. The intricacies of this field will be revealed slowly throughout the story and added here in due time.

Spells:
Spells are divided into five broad categories:
Offensive
Defensive
Maneuvers
Summons
Utility
These can be further divided based on the nature of a spell in terms of the elements or concepts utilized. E.g
Water, Wind, Earth, Fire, Metal, Wood, Lightning, Space, Time, Mind, Soul etc.
Some individuals are predisposed to a certain element or elements, while most have no affinity to them. Those with no affinity may still cast spells, however, how well they can cast them depends on their capacity and proficiency.

All of the above remains valid during the apocalypse. However, new ideas, fresh power systems, and the utilization of technology would change the scope of combat for both, earthlings and continentals.
