“He tells me that this woman had promised to help him get a green card.”

“Yes, she would certainly be the one who would be able to do that, as she is fairly high up in the immigration department.”

“He has not heard from her in quite a while and is wondering where he stands with that.”

“I’ll bring it up with her tonight. As I said, I would not want to lose him. If I can do anything to move things along, I definitely will.”

“Thank you, sir.”

“But again, I’m not understanding your interest in Rabi obtaining a green card.”

I chose my words carefully. France is a Catholic country, and for that reason has never legalized gay marriage. I could not possibly know just where Jean Claude stood on this issue. So I just said, “We have become close. Very close. I would love to bring him to America one day.” I left open whether I meant for a visit or permanently. But Jean Claude picked up on it right away.
