We reached the door to my room and he helped me inside. He grabbed a slip of paper from beside the house phone and wrote his cell number on it. “Please call me if you need anything, for any reason. And if you wish to put in a claim with the Segway tour company, I will help you with that, even though it will probably cost me my job.”

“Oh, Roberto, don’t be silly. I would never do that. It’s just a very mild sprain, that’s all. I’ll probably forget all about it in a few hours.” I wasn’t about to tell him how it happened. I felt like such an idiot.

“All the same, if you are feeling that much better, if it’s nothing, I wish you would call me later to tell me that. I feel terrible about this.”

The only thing you should feel terrible about, I thought to myself, is that I was looking at that jogger, and not at you.

“Alright, I’ll do that, if it will make you feel better. But please don’t worry. It will be okay. And I would never do anything that would cost you your job.”
