POV - Governor CAL

[Day 2, March 2002, 1pm]

I blinked in disbelief, struggling to process the implications of Caldwell's suggestion. Marriage? The idea seemed preposterous, absurd even, yet there was a twisted logic to it that I couldn't quite shake.

"Marriage?" I repeated, my voice tinged with disbelief. "You can't be serious, Caldwell."

But she remained unfazed, her expression inscrutable as she continued to outline her proposal with chilling detachment.

"Think about it," she pressed, her words dripping with a sinister undercurrent. "A public display of unity, a lover's quarrel resolved. It's the perfect narrative to quell any doubts and silence the whispers once and for all."

Caldwell's words lingered in the air like a heavy fog, casting a shadow over the room as she delivered her chilling ultimatum. "Married people are more trustworthy," she declared, her voice cold and calculating.

Abigail's eyes widened in disbelief at Caldwell's audacious suggestion, her features contorted with a mixture of shock and indignation. For a moment, silence hung heavy in the air as she struggled to find her voice amidst the tumult of emotions swirling within her.

"I-I can't believe you would even suggest such a thing," Abigail finally managed to stammer out, her voice trembling with a mixture of anger and disbelief. "This is... this is beyond absurd."

Her rejection was swift and unequivocal, a firm dismissal of Caldwell's twisted proposal that left no room for negotiation or compromise. In that moment, it was as if a veil had been lifted, revealing the true depths of Caldwell's Machiavellian machinations.

"I will not be a pawn in your sick game," Abigail continued, her voice rising with each word as she stared down Caldwell with unwavering defiance. "I refuse to sacrifice my integrity and dignity for the sake of some twisted narrative. I am not some puppet to be manipulated at your whim."

"You think you have a choice in this matter?" Caldwell's voice was low and dangerous, laced with a thinly veiled threat that hung in the air like a storm cloud on the horizon. "Do you really believe you can defy me and walk away unscathed?"

Her words carried a weight of implication that sent a shiver of fear coursing through Abigail's veins, her resolve faltering in the face of Caldwell's ruthless determination.

"I have evidence," Caldwell continued, her voice dripping with malice. "Very damning evidence that could destroy you, ruin your reputation, and leave you shunned by everyone in our society."

The threat hung in the air like a dagger poised at Abigail's throat, the implicit promise of destruction looming ominously over her head.

A knock at the door interrupted us, the guard opened it and took the contents, which was brought to Caldwell personally. Her face smirked as if the devil had possessed her, voice dripped with calculated venom as she read aloud from the transcript.

"Actually, Governor, would you mind if I came to meet you personally?" she recited, her tone mocking and disdainful.

As the words hung in the air like a damning indictment, Abigail's face blanched with shock and disbelief. It was a veritable betrayal, a twisted distortion of her intentions twisted to serve Caldwell's nefarious agenda.

"I-I never meant..." Abigail's voice faltered, her protests drowned out by the damning evidence laid bare before her.

But Caldwell paid no heed to her protests, her gaze icy and unforgiving as she continued to read from the transcript with chilling precision, "I'd like to ensure that you feel welcome here, and perhaps offer a bit of reassurance in person."

"That sounds very suggestive, don't you think?," Caldwell remarked with a cruel smirk, her tone dripping with derision. "Your unclean words, captured for all eternity."

"I-I.." With the sound of hesitation, colors from Abigail's face drained. Slumped back in her chair. Defeated. Defeated by a demon who is on my side. I felt deep empathy towards Abigail that this has escalated this far.

"You have until the end of the day to reconsider," Caldwell warned, her tone final and unforgiving. "Otherwise, prepare to face the consequences of defying me."

Caldwell's eyes narrowed, her expression hardening into a mask of cold resolve. But beneath the facade of authority and control, I could sense a flicker of uncertainty, a crack in her steely facade that hinted at the doubt lurking beneath the surface.

With that, Caldwell gestured for us to leave before she turned on her heel. She strode out of the room, leaving Abigail reeling in the wake of her menacing ultimatum. And as the weight of Caldwell's threat settled like a leaden weight in the pit of my stomach, I couldn't help but wonder what dark secrets lay hidden beneath the surface, waiting to be unleashed with devastating consequences.

Rising from my seat, I moved to intercept Caldwell as she made to leave the room, my footsteps echoing loudly in the tense silence.

"Caldwell, wait," I called out, my voice tinged with desperation as I reached out to grasp her arm, halting her progress for a fleeting moment. "This is not right, Caldwell."

She then held my hand and assured me, her gaze flinty and unyielding as she turned to face me."You gave me the reins on this," she declared.

"I am doing what's best for you, Governor." Her words are a chilling reminder of the authority I had bestowed upon her in my moment of weakness.

I recoiled at the starkness of her assertion, the weight of her words settling like a heavy burden upon my shoulders. In granting Caldwell free rein to handle the situation as she saw fit, I had unwittingly unleashed a force of ruthless determination that now threatened to consume us both.

"But is this truly the right course of action? Threatening her?" I implored, the words tumbling from my lips in a desperate plea for reason amidst the chaos.

But Caldwell remained unmoved, her expression impassive as she met my gaze with a resolute stare.

"The die has been cast," she replied, her voice devoid of remorse or hesitation. "Now we must see it through to the end, no matter the cost."

This went dark quick. Felt bad for Abigail taking so much beating from a simple misunderstanding.
