Chapter 19

-Evelyn's POV

''The third phase of our plan is completed,'' Jake mind links me.

''Assessment?''

'''Three out of four,'' Emmet joins the conversation. ''Care to guess, little sister?''

''No, it could only be alpha Newborn ans his pack that screwed up. How bad was it?''

''Bad,'' Jake sighs. ''The warriors of the Yellowstone pack had everything under control until their alpha messed everything up. His orders confused them and they stopped working together.''

I blow out the smoke and put my cigarette out. This outcome didn't surprise me at all, but it frustrated me. My brothers would only be granted their own territory if all the packs were able to handle themselves.

''Is the Newborn aware of this?''

''He has been informed, but aware of his actions he is most certainly not! He basically blames everyone but himself,'' Emmet grumbles.

''I wouldn't have expected anything else from him. Do you need me to send more rogues his way?''

''No,'' Jake says firmly. ''They can never find out that these rogues attacks are initiated by us and Graham is getting suspicious.''

''The old grump is always suspicious,'' I say bored. ''You two wanted to know how far the packs had come and I found a way to make that happen.''

''Ev, you know they won't see it like that,'' Emmet says and I can hear the concern in his voice.

''They will never found out, so let it go. Phase three is done and I will continue with...''

''Evelyn, I really think that you should come back,'' Jake interrupts me.

There is that feeling of guilt again and for the umpteenth time Sybil has to force me to stay focused on my current task. Finding out if the White Claw pack and the Shadow pack should actually be considered a threat.

On my runs and during patrol I sensed that the Shadow pack was watching from the other side of the border. They never crossed it, but they were always there watching our movements and I needed to know why.

What was stopping them from making a real move?

That's what I needed to find out, because at least then I could do something useful. Jake knew that and still he kept asking me to come back.

''We already had this discussion, Jake. The Fading is basically natural selection. Those who are strong enough survive and those who are not receive mercy from the Goddess. That's the way...''

''Well it seems that Sage and Clairy are not strong enough,'' Emmet says coldly and I can feel him break the connection.

For a moment I stand frozen in place and then blind panic takes over. All my instincts are screaming at me to go back and I start my motorcycle. I want to close the choke lever and open the throttle, but my hands won't move.

It's like they are glued onto the grips and I let out angry roar, because I knew what was going on.

''Sybil, let go of me!''

''As soon as you start to think rational again,'' my wolf answers calmly. ''The Shadow pack has no idea that a rogue entered their territory. They think you are just passing through, but they will figure it out if they see you drive like you normally do.''

''Sybil, I'm warning you! I don't care about the Shadow pack and so what if they find out that I'm not a human? They will never be able to catch me.''

''No, you idiot,'' Sybil snarls. ''They will just see a shewolf enter another territory where she is not stopped or followed. They will assume that you are a spy and decide that they are finally ready to attack. What would mean that you are risking the lives of many and for what? So you can watch them die and then some more?''

My panic is changing into rage and in my mind I'm visualising how I am going to make Sybil regret what she was doing to me.

''Reacting out of panic is never a good idea, but reacting out of arrogance? You know what arrogance does, Evelyn!''

''Arrogance kills,'' I say softly and I stop fighting my wolf.

Surrendering to Sybil actually calms me down and I'm able to shove away all my emotions. The most logical thing for me to do was to continue my work. At least then I was making myself useful and I wouldn't have that option if I went back.

''I'm here to keep my promise, not to intervene with natural selection. How does introducing ourselves to some of those warriors sound to you, Syb?''

''Rational,'' Sybil answers as she releases me from her hold.

Jake is still trying to mind link me, but I don't let him. My brother wouldn't be able to convince me to come back, but I knew his words would get to me and I couldn't have that.

I'm sorry Jake, but this is me keeping my promise.

-Evelyn's POV

I put the last pool ball in the triangle and I get ready to break.

''Can we join you for a game?''

I look up and I see three tall men standing on the other side of the pool table. The one in the middle gives me a confident smile as he lets his gaze roam over my body.

Alpha.

There was no doubt about it. Taller and bigger then the other two, but I could also sense it. The energy he radiated made the other wolves act submissive.

''What do you say, blue eyes?'' the alpha continues.

So the contacts are working.

Hiding my scent made sure that other wolves couldn't sniff me out and behaving like a human helped, but my eyes would always give me away. Humans don't have golden eyes or eyes that would suddenly change colour.

That's where the contacts came in.

''They will never figure out that you are a wolf, not if they just keep looking at your boobs!'' Sybil grumbles. ''I get the dying your hair and the contacts. I even get the make-up, buy why did you had to dress like you are giving it away?''

I break and I watch the pool balls scatter. Four balls go in and I bet that I could be done with this game in five moves.

''It would make their description of me more interesting don't you think? A shewolf with a great rack, raven black hair, blue eyes and red lips.''

''I will think about if you get me a Sazerac and a beer,'' I say while keeping my gaze set on the pool table.

The two wolves standing behind their alpha seem surprised by my reaction, but the alpha only looks amused. He walks over to the bar and comes back with the drinks.

''Ready to make things interesting, blue eyes?'' the alpha asks as he gestures the other wolves to go.

''Only if you can show me how I can get the red ball in that corner without risking the black one to go in as well,'' I sigh.

''Gladly, but how about you tell me your name first,'' the alpha says as he steps behind me.

''Blue eyes is fine,'' I mumble as I try my hardest not to wince.

My whole body wants to get away from the alpha. Not because I feel scared or threatened, but because the thought of him touching me is making me feel sick.

''Keep it together and I promise that I will deal with him,'' Sybil says softly. ''Focus on your boobs!''

Sybil's unique way of comforting makes me smile and I'm back in my role. There had to be a reason why an alpha came to a human bar so often.

''Just follow my movements, blue eyes,'' the alpha whispers in my ear and I feel him trying to catch a scent.

He was really making sure that I was a human and that meant he was still vigilant.

''And there we go!'' the alpha smirks.

The red ball goes in and the black one remains in it's place, a move a human wouldn't have been able to make.

''Okay, you actually know what you are doing,'' I say as I turn around. ''Cheers, Sazerac!''

I take a big gulp of the beer before I start to put the pool balls back in the triangle.

''Tell me something, blue eyes. How did you ended up alone in this forsaken place?''

''He is testing you,'' Sybil warns me. ''They must have seen you with the rogue.''

''Then I guess it is time to tell a story,''

''Karma,'' I answer the alpha as I take another big gulp. ''Met a handsome stranger in a bar and after the night we spend together I believed that I finally found the one. Two bars further I walk in on him in the bathroom where he was fucking some chick. That somehow ended in me stealing his motorcycle, getting lost and ending up in this bar.

The alpha takes a sip from his drink and he shakes his head.

''A bold move stealing his motorcycle, blue eyes! Weren't you afraid that he would come after you?''

''Didn't you gather from the getting lost part that my plan wasn't flawless? ''I mutter. ''The bastard broke my heart and I wanted to do the same to him! That's why I stole his motorcycle, because that's the only thing he truly cared about!''

I finish my drink and I remove the triangle.

''Can we play now or should I ask your friends, Sazerac?''

The alpha pins me between his arms and he smiles.

''We are going to play, blue eyes. All night if you like and you don't have to worry about that idiot of an ex of yours. Not while you are with me, I promise.''

Great, but I don't worry about the dead.

''Excuse me, alp.. I mean Ryker!''

''What is it?'' the alpha snaps to the skinny looking guy who is standing next to us.

''I'm very sorry to disturb your, sir. I was told to deliver this to you and to you alone.''

''Just tell me if it's done and give the rest to Owen.''

''It's done, sir. I followed your exact instructions and I will leave this with Owen. Have a great night, sir!''

''Wait!'' the alpha commands.

He snatches the bag out of the guy's hands and he take something out. He shoves the bag back in the hands of the guy and then all his attention is back on me.

''Got you something, blue eyes. Something that would go great with your red lips.''

The alpha holds up a red flower and I don't even try to hide my surprise. The alpha of the Shadow pack came here to pick up some flowers?

''This is a first for me, Sazarec. Getting a flower in a bar that is in the middle of nowhere.''

''This is a very special flower and it looks very good with your red lips,'' the alpha smiles. ''Do you still want to play pool or should we move on to another game?''

I put the flower behind my ear and I give the alpha a kiss on his cheek, before I finish the rest of his drink.

''I'm ready to leave.''

And to murder you, you sick son of...
