Shen Zhui observed carefully and found that although Liu Yu, like Gan Pengfei, was in charge of punishment, his recorded stories often depicted his leniency toward criminals.
The most striking example was the last story:
"It is said that there were once two martial artists who, due to natural disasters, had no means to survive and were forced to turn to banditry. They were later caught by the government forces."
"On the eve of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the two men asked Liu Yu to allow them to reunite with their aged mother at home, promising to return to prison voluntarily after seven days. Touched by their display of filial piety, Liu allowed them to go and even gave them money for their journey. Unfortunately, the two men never returned."
