58 Chapter 58: Hawkwood Barony III

After saying this, the man who was dressed nicely left the two of them.

"Sister, don't tell me that you're going to do as he says. We can still keep this up, if we sell some of the lands then we can still last until the following month."

Daphne merely shook her head and said nothing.

Herbert who had witnessed this scene was pleasantly surprised. This was part of the backstory that the book mentioned. If he had a higher rank in his Serpentdream bloodline then he might have considered taking a longer look, however, since he only has a limited amount of time, he decided to skip this scene to look for something more related to the church.

In a flash, the environment had once again been altered. Davos who was reliving his worst nightmare was once again thrust to the same starting point of his descent to hell. This was the point where he had entered the crossroads to hell.

The catalyst for the drastic change that happened to him, was the humiliation and death of his dear sister.

The sky had changed from a bright and shiny day into a dark and starry night. This time, Davos was running for his life. He was being chased around by soldiers from the Oxsword family. He who was running barefoot was no match for his pursuers who were on tall horses. He didn't have time to consider the direction where he is headed nor did he care. All that he needed to do was to outrun his pursuers and he could have his revenge.

As he swore his desire for revenge in his heart, he eventually reached a cliff. On his back were the quickly coming pursuers and in front was the tall cliff. He no longer had anywhere to go. He was surrounded and had no choice but to accept his fate. From the group of his pursuers, he suddenly heard a familiar voice that called out to him.

"Davos, give up. You're already surrounded, as long as you obediently follow us back then you can still have a chance to make up for your crimes."

Hearing his deceitful words, Davos felt incomparable anger rising from within him. It was this voice that had caused his sister to die. He swore that if he could, he would bash his head in with a stone until even his mother could no longer recognize him.

However, at the last moment, he looked up at the deep night sky and seemed to have suddenly heard something from the heavens.

"Sister, you're right. I should live."

In that instant, Davos took the chance as he ran with his eyes wide open. He knew that if he headed for the soldiers then he would no longer have the opportunity to live. So, he decided to make his way to the cliff.

"He- He dared to jump!"

"How can we explain this to the lord now?"

"Send somebody to look for his corpse down there."

As the men clamored around the cliff, they soon left with a sigh. They knew that there was no chance for Davos to escape the place alive.

However, Davos was lucky. The trees had managed to soften his fall and he managed to remain alive with only a couple of bruises and broken bones.

He could feel his left arm had dislocated but he was still alive. He could feel the blood flowing on his skin near his forehead. He knew that if he somehow managed to come out of there alive that his wounded face would become scarred, but he didn't mind it that much.

It was during this time that he suddenly realized that there seem to be another group of people who were nearby. When he heard their footsteps, the first thing that he thought was to temporarily hold his breath.

The fall had damaged him and he knew that moving rashly in his injured state was a foolish move as he would quickly be chased. His current advantage was that he was still hidden and he wants to keep it that way until he recovered enough strength to move.

"Who's there?"

However, things didn't work out for him as he was quickly spotted. But in every misfortune was a silver lining. The one that approached him wasn't his pursuer. Hooded figures who wore a Phi-like symbol around their necks soon surrounded him.

At this moment, Herbert scanned the figures and continued to play the rest of Davos' life until he ran out of energy to support his abilities. Compared to the White-Horned Snakes, his ability needed to be constantly activated which drains a large portion of his energy reserves as a Transcendent.

From that point onwards, Herbert had seen Davos becoming a pawn of the church. He had seen how he had infiltrated the territory that he had once feared. He had seen his rise in power and his revenge against the Tax Collector that doomed his sister. He felt that the scene of Davos slowly becoming the person that he had once hated with every fiber of being was peculiar, sad, and interesting. In the end, he had also done the same detestable things that the previous Tax Collector had done to him, It was pathetic, loathsome, and pitiful.

Woefully, Davos didn't get to have his revenge against the Oxsword lord who was the direct cause of his sister's death. In retrospect, Herbert could see that Davos was already working his way there, but he had been abducted by him before he could continue his cold-blooded revenge.

Fortunately, Herbert had already seen what he wanted to see. He no longer had any use for the Tax Collector in front of him. He had also spotted a couple of traps and pitfalls of information that Davos had given out during his interrogation.

"How impressive."

Herbert couldn't help but give him his praise and honest opinion. Being able to withstand the torture and even give a few pitfalls and traps for his enemies was worthy of praise in Herbert's eyes. Using his ability to invade his dream felt like he had spent a lot of time, however, in truth it only took him a couple of seconds.

"With this, I no longer have any need for you. It's unfortunate, but I will carry out your revenge for you so you can rest at ease."

After saying these words, Davos collapsed and lost consciousness. Herbert naturally no longer continued to hold on to his head. He then took a step back and retreated away from the prison cell.

"I've already had enough, I'm leaving now."

"Understood, young master."

The prison guard quickly locked the cell again and continued to lead Herbert out.
