The Experiment

{This event occurred immediately after the first chapter}

Three months after the events at the Tomb, the boy Jocelyn found was taken to a research facility in order to find out who or what he was. The head of the research Ray Rowdy and his team came to a conclusion that he was human; more or less. They also found information on the chains by studying ancient scrolls, books and writings related to chains made with magic. The chains were used to seal his powers and consciousness and could not be destroyed by magic or external force.

Ray personally told Jocelyn about their findings and she replied by asking if there was a way to remove the chains as she plans on adopting him.

"Removing the chains is impossible and potentially disastrous, we don't know why he was sealed and unsealing him may bring calamity to this city" Ray protested.

Jocelyn, however, had another idea in mind. She knew unsealing him might be dangerous so she was not planning on doing it completely; She planned on partially unsealing him so as to see part of why he was sealed.

She looked at Ray and his team

"Could we convert the rune markings on the chains into a magic circle or a crest?" she asked.

Ray was silent for a few moments as he thought about what she had asked. He nods after a few seconds and replied

"It is possible but converting it into a crest is better than a magic circle. Magic circles are easier to dispel than crests."

Jocelyn smiled and takes a step closer to him

"Okay, if you can do that, ill personally sponsor your next research" she said in a confident tone.

Her words shocked Ray. He didn't expect her to say that. His next research was a big one as well and he need a lot of funds for it. His teem was lacking in some necessary equipment to carry out the project. By promising to sponsor them, Jocelyn has successfully put him a tight spot.

Ray couldn't help but think how vicious a woman she is when she really wants something.

"Fine. Give me a few minutes to discuss with my team" he said to her

He gathered his team at a corner and briefed them on the mission.

Tetsuya one of the personnel in the team rose up and asked "Wont it be dangerous to unseal him? Even if it is partial, he could blow this place to bits"

Ray smiled confidently at him.

"Rest assured, there are precautions in order to ensure everyone's safety" he assured

Ruby, the magic engineer was however was more concerned abut the funding for the project.

"The funding has been taken care of as well as our next project as long as we successfully partially unseal him." Ray told them "Jocelyn is a member of a respectable family in this city. She's trustworthy."

No further questions were asked and Ray ended their meeting by stating that they would begin in the next week. Everyone agreed and went back to their work stations.

They used the first week to prepare an anti magic barrier, this was brought up and executed by Ruby and the rest of the Magic Engineers. It took about a month of research and trials in order to convert the Rune Inscription on the chains to a crest that they suggested should be on his back because of the size.

After all the preparations were made, the procedure began. Using several magic stones gotten from the same tomb the boy was found in, they made a device to constantly pass mana into the chains.

Doing this put the chains in a state of overwork which temporarily weaken it. The seal is weakened Just enough to create the crest on his back; rendering the chain useless and partially sealing him.

When the procedure was completed, a sudden burst of energy accompanied by lightning erupted from him. The lightning was being contained by the barrier that Ruby, a new member of the team, had set up but the shock wave caused by the energy outburst ravaged the research center.

The Alert signal went off and a voice on the speaker rang out throughout the area

"Alert! Alert! Every one should evacuate the facility immediately. Project J.O.N has gone out of control, Evacuate Immediately.".

Every personnel Rushed to the exit; Ray noticing Ruby "What are you doing we should evacuate, this place is not going to hold any longer."

Ruby looked hesitant to leave "Go on, i'll catch up. I want to back up all our research and also try to reduce the blast radius" She replied

Ray grabbed her hand, stopping her from going back

"Don't worry about those. Let's save ourselves first" he said

"I'll be fast." Ruby insisted "Quickly leave with tho others, i'll meet you at the car"

Knowing how stubborn the girl was, Ray could agree and warn her to be careful again before rushing away. He still needed to get others to safety.

Ruby went through the soft copy of their project and copied it all to a thumb drive. While the files were being copied, she ran an algorithm that relayed all the power in the building to the the Anti Magic Barrier and increasing its intensity. When she was done, all the files had been copied.

She grabbed the thumb drive but before she could leave, the building exploded with lightning arcing in every direction.

Rays face went pale when he say Ruby had not gotten out of the building yet. He punched the ground blaming himself for the events that occurred.

While Ray blamed himself, another explosion went off and then a flash of lightning in their direction. After the dust cleared up, they saw the boy with the crest on his back holding an unconscious Ruby. He carefully laid her down on the floor as all the members of the team rushed to her.

Ruby slowly opened her eyes and mumbled "Told you I'd be fine." right before passing out again.

Ruby was taken to the Hospital while Ray took the boy to the Hoshikage mansion. When they got to the mansion, Ray explained everything to Jocelyn; From how the project went to the destruction of their research center. Jocelyn was pleased with their result and promised that she would build a new research center for them. She also sent money to all personnel as compensation.

A month passed and the boy was legally adopted into the Hoshikage family by Jocelyn under the name Jon. She told him that he was to protect her daughters with his life to which he nodded in agreement. She also told him that Ruby was fine and they recovered all their research all thanks to him. He gave no reaction but she could tell that he was happy to hear that.
