William did not bring too many people to accompany him to the Devil's Dens.

He chose two Epic level warriors to come with him, Lautner and Eric.
He did not select Odom as there had to be someone present to take command of the legion to form a defensive line. And without William's signal, he was not to attack.
Even though Alec was an assassin, William did not bring him either. Instead, he ordered him to scout for possible ambushes.
Besides, William had brought along Eric in their suicidal mission. If William did not arrange for his son, Alec, to be in a safe zone, the father Eric would not be happy and give his all.
Though there was a saying that said when a father and a son were to fight together on the battlefield, they would be invincible.
