Really, what a lazy reason

"Woah, so pretty…" A young boy stared at the sapphire teardrop necklace in his hand. "Could this be for me?"

His small, chubby face crinkled into a wide smile as he looked at his mother. Lacie would have thought that the little shota was really adorable if it wasn't for the fact that she was the necklace.

'Should I be happy that I'm getting complimented or sad that the only time I hear those words is as a necklace?'

The last thing Lacie remembered was getting hit by a truck on her way to work. It had to be, she reckoned, the most ludicrous cause of death she could die by. The truck swerved onto the sidewalk because of a banana peel a second grader had dropped out of their lunchbox as they crossed the street.

'To all those who were hit by truck-kun before me, I'm sorry for dying in such a shameful way.'

When Lacie woke up, she was laying beside the sapphire necklace. She was disappointed when she didn't get a flood of memories rushing to her head, causing her to have a serious headache and alarm everyone around her.

But, would anyone really be alarmed by her?

Of course not!

As a spirit, unless they were some freak of nature or extremely morbid person that made money from their extreme morbidity, no living person would see her. Yes, she was now a spirit that was bound to that very same necklace in the young boy's hands.

When she first awoke, Lacie tried every possible way she could think of to get away from the cursed necklace. What she gathered from her exploits was that she couldn't be more than fifty meters away from it no matter what. As for how Lacie gathered that information, she'd rather not remember those particular experiences.

She examined her transparent bluish body. Instead of becoming a beauty that could topple mountains with a single smile, she had the same lanky build her mother had given her in her past life.

The corners of Lacie's mouth curved into a bitter smile. 'Sigh, how disappointing…'

this is why you shouldn't expect too much.
