I spent several hours getting used to flying, it was pretty easy to do and not like all of the comics I read… as long as I willed my body to fly in a certain direction, it would move but I would be the one doing the navigation after all.
"This way, I don't have to take a taxi anymore," I muttered as I landed in an alleyway, even if I had already made a decision to become a hero – it wouldn't be an easy thing to do.
First of all, the world was chock full of them. A lot of people were getting powers, a lot of people wanted to be heroes as well and it was only the good Superhero teams that were recognized by the public.
'Teen team… Fighter force… The Greeks… they're a lot of them,' I thought, and a Hero's worth was dependent on their Superpower. If I only had the power to fly, it would be quite hectic to deal with Villains.
I looked around the alleyway, clenching my fist. Finding nothing to punch, I gave the wall a powerful punch and watched web-like cracks emerge from the place where I had just punched, the building shook and I gave a little smile.
"Not only do I have Flight but Super-strength as well," I muttered while leaving the alleyway and walking home. The streets of New York were bustling with activity like they always were and Humanity was on the edge of their seats.
The world was always being attacked one way or another, it was either an alien invasion or a bank robbery… or even a Robot war. There were so many things happening and yet Humanity always found a way to survive, which was something that was admirable.
There was a spring in my step, I was excited about the fact that I was going to become a Hero but I calmed down, next came the hard part – Making a name for myself. There were a lot of heroes on Earth and everyone was looking for a chance to prove themselves so it wouldn't be easy… I would make it work somehow, and after that, join one of the prominent Superhero teams.
I had a lot of plans set out for the future but now I had to… focus. I knocked on the door of my house with a little bit of fear in my eyes, it has been a week – a fucking terrifying week of kidnapping and experimenting and now, I was finally at home yet I was anything but calm right now.
I managed to knock on the door, my nervousness getting the better of me as the spot I knocked caved in a bit. I pulled my arm back and the knob twisted and the door was opened.
The person who opened the door was a middle-aged woman with shoulder-length black hair and deep blue eyes, she had a beautiful round poker face.
She scrutinized me for a moment before her emotionless eyes gained emotion, the woman rushed forward and hugged me.
"Oh… Peter, where have you been?" She asked, tears of joy running down her cheeks.
I hugged her back, keeping my emotions in check… she was the only family I had.
"I was kidnapped Mom," I replied, "Villains again,"
Mom's hug tightened around me.
"Are you sure you're fine?" Mom asked.
"Totally," I replied, "They didn't do anything to me, although I'm sad I missed a week of school,"
No way I'm telling her that I got Superpowers, I'm not going to the hospital to get my blood checked…
"It's already Friday, you can use the Weekend to prepare yourself," Mom said as she dragged me inside, "Come on, we have a lot of talking to do,"
#####
I stared at the mirror, observing my face.
"Nothing strange here," I muttered. Looks like there weren't any side effects to these powers… although I'm still surprised, I waved it off.
"Every Hero's origin story is different," I mused while clenching my fist, it was a weekend and I would be relatively free until Monday. In a world where Alien invasions happened monthly, a simple kidnapping is nothing too surprising.
And it certainly wouldn't give me an excuse if I neglected my studies.
I stepped out of the Bathroom and walked to my room, the memories of the experiment still flashing in my head although it felt distant now – the fear was drowned out, after all, it wasn't for nothing.
I opened the door of my room and found it cleaned, it was not forgotten like I had expected – Mom really did a number on this one. My bag was on the bed and the books were arranged on a desk at the corner, I didn't mind them though and looked out the window.
'The world really is big,' I thought with a sigh, turning away from the window before I got the urge to fly again… I had to prepare for tomorrow, and for that, I opened the closer and began rummaging through my clothes.
One of the most important things about being a hero was their costume. I didn't have an official costume ready yet so I had to make do with what I could find.
I had a lot of expectations for tomorrow, and they weren't little. All the time I had spent practicing in the sky wouldn't go to waste.
Mom opened the door and stepped into my room.
"Looking for something?" She asked, her blue eyes radiating curiosity.
"Yeah," I replied, "I couldn't find one of my books,"
Mom's curiosity died down but she still had the smile on her lips.
"I just finished making dinner," Mom said, "Let's have some of it together, why don't we, Peter?"
"Sure, I've been looking forward to having a taste of your cooking," I replied with a tinge of excitement with my voice.
My words only made her smile widen and we soon went downstairs, to have dinner in the comfort of each other – a peaceful dinner.
