Chapter 12: Room of Requirement

Finished with my classes for the day, I head toward the Gryffindor common room to relax and finish the assigned homework.

"Mate, fancy a game of chess?" Ron asked me as I enter the common room. "Sorry, I want to finish my homework right now, maybe after I am done it."

Ron just gave me a look saying " Have you gone mad? You just finished your classes."

"The sooner I am done with my work the freer time I will have" I told Ron as I settled down by the fire.

After resting for a few minutes, I started with my homework which was not much as it was the first day.

I was done with my work in under an hour. I went to my dormitory to put my books and homework in my trunk.

Taking my study journal, I head towards the seventh floor in search of the fabled Room of Requirement. Soon I arrived in front of the tapestry of Barnabas the Barry, the man who attempted to train trolls for the ballet.

' I need a room to study magic. I need a room to study magic. I need a room to study magic' I thought as I walked past the wall opposite to the tapestry three times.

Suddenly a door appeared on the wall, which I quickly entered. On the other side of the door was a room spacious room with practice dummies and a lot of books and tomes arranged on these shelves on either side of the room. There were many books on charms, transfiguration, dark arts and books from restricted section as well. Many books on elemental magic, illusions, alchemy, rituals and other obscure branches of magic were also present.

I decided to practice first to third year spells nonverbally to better use them in difficult situations. After practicing for about an hour I decided to study books on elemental magic as I was always intrigued by the rather obscure branch of magic.

Elemental magic as its name suggests is a branch of magic which deals with the manipulation of natural elements with magic. There are no set of spells for elemental magic as it completely depends on the ability to manipulate a certain element, but certain spells can only be used if your ability to control the element is high enough. The best example would be Fiendfyre, as anyone can use the spell but only a wizard who is highly skilled in fire element can truly control the sentient flames.

There are 5 main elements namely fire, water, wind, earth and lightning. A person can learn to control all 5 elements to a high level, but it would be quite difficult. Every person has an innate affinity towards an element or two, which makes it easier for the wizard to control that specific element. I suppose I have an affinity for fire and wind as spells pertaining to these elements have always come easier to me than other elements.

Finishing up on reading I decided to start with fire element as it was my strongest and from what I know about wandlore phoenix feather wands have a very good affinity for fire magic. I quickly conjured flames, trying to transform them into a fireball by controlling the flames with my magic.

It took me about half an hour before I could even turn the stream of flame into anything ball like. Now I understand why very few people study and practice elemental magic as it very draining and requires absolute concentration of the caster to control it. I continued with my practice after taking a few moments of rest.

After completing the fireball, I realized how long it took me to turn the flames into a fireball. This time I started practicing the speed with which I can turn the flames into a fireball. After practicing for a long time, I was finally able to turn my flames into a ball almost instantaneously.

Casting quick tempus charm, I saw that Dinner would start soon. Gathering my belonging I quickly made my way towards the Gryffindor dorms to meet up with Ron and Hermione.

"Harry where have you been I have been searching for you for so long? Even Ron did not know where you were." Hermione quickly said, worry evident on her face. " I was afraid and with the whole Sirius Black and Dementors situation going on I was afraid something bad happened to you."

"Relax Hermione, I was just practicing spells in an abandoned classroom and lost track of time. Also, I am sorry for making you worry about me." I replied with a smile.

"Hey Harry, where were you mate? Anyway, let's go to the great hall, I am very hungry." Ron said as he quickly exited the common room not giving me much time to reply.

I quickly followed behind Hermione as we made our way towards the Great Hall.
