Walking through Rue Saint-Antoine street, Ted looked at the old buildings all around him. They were all very similar, with similar blue rooftops with square windows peeking out of them, looking at the street from the top. Most buildings along the street were decorated in such manner, with similar stone walls and simple shop fronts.
It was very different from the main roads in London, where the buildings along the same street would often wildly differ from one another with totally different architectural styles, making this street feel more cohesive than the streets he usually traveled. While some might find it more boring, Ted couldn't help but like the refreshing change of pace.
The street wasn't especially long, only a few hundred meters, but it was packed with people from one end to the other, being very busy at noon. Looking at the restaurants on the street, they were all full to the brim, and one of them even had a not-so-short line outside, people waiting, hoping to have the chance to dine.
Having nothing better to do, as he had to search the whole street carefully to actually find the place, Ted started scanning the passing crowd. The place would be covered with enchantments, so unless he actually looked at it knowing it was there, it would be invisible. According to the book, it was part of the defense that was set on it during the revolution, and as far as he knew, it was never changed since.
It wasn't really a problem, as every wizard or witch that came to France, or at least most of them, would either be escorted by a guide from a traveling agency or a local friend. As for the French themselves, they would be introduced to the place by either their guardian or teacher, mostly upon reaching school age.
The French magical school, Beauxbatons, was considered one of the top schools in Europe and had many admitted into it from other countries, including mainly Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, and many more from North Africa and Europe. Although there was actually a school considered equal or even better in Italy, it was one that students had to fit a certain criterion to be admitted, meaning almost half of the Italian-born Wizards and Witches had to study abroad.
The crowd was very generic, just like in London during the holidays. There were many tourists who chose to visit the capital as a 'cheap' alternative to going to some beach abroad. Paris, just like many other big cities, was like its own country, being very different in many habits from the smaller towns around it.
The people dressed in various ways, giving Ted slight indications of the purpose of their wandering the streets.
From the men wearing neat suits in mostly black and blue, who were obviously working in the city or had different business, women who were either carrying a bunch of bags or wandering the streets looking at some storefronts, obviously shopping.
Families going together with their kids, who were there on vacation, and those who were wearing backpacks and looking at the building with gazes full of wonder making a stop during a long trip. There were also the natives, who were dressed more casually, as they seemed to just walk to one certain store, not looking around too much as their eyes were set on the road, not taking any of the surrounding as anything special.
There were many different colors all around him, making the street seem a lot more vibrant than they actually were, and just then, in the depth of the crowd, Ted noticed a group of three young women. All dressed in capes and short-sleeved shirts with a hood attached at the back, to those who wouldn't give a second look they looked just like any other woman on the street, as this kind of clothes, though rare and old-fashioned, were still being used even today.
But Ted saw the slight difference, only he could, as the clothes radiated a small amount of magic, clearly being enchanted. He didn't even need a single moment to think before he closed some distance, following after the three girls.
As he closed the distance, Ted could hear the three speak. Their manner of speech was slightly reserved as they talked about their plans for the day. Two of them were a lot more chatty than the last, as they spoke none stop about different types of cloths, perfumes and shoes on the market. One of them even mentioned Ted's own original potion, the skin refresher which caused a small smile to rise to his lips.
'To think even other countries use my potion...' He couldn't help but feel slightly proud, not just anyone could invent something wanted by many.
The three walked leisurely along the street, their knee length skirts blowing slightly with the wind, only a few minutes later, they turned into a pretty wide side alley, the alley was slightly narrow, with many windows looking at it from both sides, even a single car would have trouble passing through the old cobblestone street that seemed among the oldest one he had seen so far.
The alley was quite empty, only two guys stood at the corner by one of the walls, wearing what seemed like extremely old fashioned suits. They both smoked from wooden pipes as they spoke with a very heavy French accent. Ted could see clearly the signs of magic radiating from their cloths.
The girls he was following did not stop, as they gave a slight nod at the two and moved forward suddenly making turning, walking into what for Ted, who stood only around fifteen meters away, looked like a solid white stone wall. Ted's lips curving up for only a moment before returning to the his usual calm expressionless face. He found it!
Taking a deep breath, he moved only three steps forward, when the whole wall before him changed. Previously, it was only a simple stone wall, just like any other building in the street, with similar windows hanging at its upper floor, giving a view into the street, only now, they changed into a bright indigo blue colored shop front, with glowing silver letters at the the top of the door that seemed to shine under the light of the sun. 'Le Chapeau Enchanté restaurant' since 1786.
Turning back on his steps, Ted walked back into the main street, and a short walk later, he reached a public restroom that he spotted before. Entering one of the booths, Ted Immediately casted a wandless locking on the door, and placed the small black briefcase on the floor.
Opening it, he took a step inside and started climbing down a ladder, finally being swallowed whole into the small case, that barely fit his small child stature. Only a few minutes later, another figure climbed out of the briefcase, it was clad In an old fashioned black suit with a tailcoat jacket that was decorated with a cape that hanged behind him, and a dark gray shirt under it. (similar to assassin creed unity outfits, though with no assassin gear and only a simple buttoned shirt, longer pants and leather shoes instead of boots).
He had actually taken those cloths from his father's stuff, Cassius and Elara went to a renaissance ball in France a few years back, so the moment he heard of the trip, Ted, who remembered seeing a photo of his father in those, immediately took it.
From the various books he read, the French magical society, while still stuck in the past, was held more at the time of the late 19th century to the early 20th. And the wizards, didn't wear robes often, but mostly suits of the noble kind and capes attached to them. So Ted, who had already outgrew his original robe, and had long stopped using it, cut of the hat of his original robe, and attached it to the suit.
Ted looked at the mirror of the restroom as he put on a pair of silver glasses, he now looked exactly like his headmaster from the boarding school. He was an old man, in his early 60's with graying hair that still had a little bit of black in it. He had a square jaw and small scar at the right side of his forehead, that was almost hidden by his slightly crumpled aged skin.
Ted took a bit of his hair while he was in school, he took some of many people actually, just in case. The Polyjuice potion would change one's appearance to the man whose DNA was added to the brew, but it will be at the same moment the DNA was taken. This meant that if someone took the hair of someone when they where twenty, and chose to use it when the man was ninety, the result would still be the twenty years old version.
Over the past year, Ted had gathered hair samples from over five hundred people, and they were all tagged and preserved in special compartments inside his briefcase, he found that changing an identity to an unknown one, could come in handy in many situations...
Unfortunately, not many were skilled enough to brew this potion to a good level of effectiveness, leaving him short on supply with only five dozes of it that would each be effective for around four hours. He had brewed it once before, and it was actually pretty easy for him, but it took tons of time, meaning he could only use it when he had to, otherwise, his time in Diagon Alley would have been a lot easier.
Slicking his hair to the side, Ted made a few expressions as he looked at the mirror, checking a few things. Some people would look quite weird as they showed different expressions. Most people never thought of such things, but some people would often abstain from making certain expressions that others might use quite often, as a result of how it makes them look.
A toothy smile, would be the best example of this, as people with crooked teeth would most often not smile like that. It isn't something they think of, or do intentionally, but like a trained muscle that would react in certain ways to certain situation. It happens totally unconsciously.
One who had always had perfect teeth, would probably show their teeth as they smile, meanwhile others might just smile naturally with a close mouth or have their lips a bit lowered hiding their front teeth from view.
The Polyjuice potion, might change someone's muscle, skin, nerves and teeth to be identical to another persons, but the brain wouldn't change at all, meaning such reactions might vary when using the potion, and Ted, with his slightly perfectionist attitude, would saddle for nothing less than a perfect performance.
Looking at his watch that showed it was a bit past one, he opened the door with a wave of his hand, and walked back into the street, a small smile on his face as he headed back to the alley, not giving the passing crowd a second look.
