Nicolaus had asked for Rafte earlier, wanting to know the latest on the investigation to discover the truth about Lady Clarissa's case.

Rafte was not one to leave his superior waiting. He stepped through the threshold and strode into the room. His head inclined in a curt nod as he stopped a few paces from Nicolaus desk.

It was that subtle gesture, but Nicolaus knew him well enough to recognize it as a sign. He just knew Rafte had something for him.

"What is the news, Rafte?"

Rafte cleared his throat, straightening his posture slightly. "My lord," he began, his voice coming out a low rumble, "I brought some report regarding Lady Clarissa's maid."

Lured in, Nicolaus leaned forward, his elbows resting on the desk. "Let's hear about it," he pressed with a note of urgency lacing his voice.
