“Then what happened?” Randy hides a hastily bitten lip. “After he became Elder.”
Old Man shakes his head. “The power got to his faction.” He stares into the distance. “As it does everybody.” He sighs and says, “You’re better off asking in the village. I don’t know their reasoning so I can’t possibly explain it better than them. You won’t believe me anyway and I have to find…ah, Frank?”
“That’s what we called him,” Mica pipes up. “Guyapi or Frank, because he was mostly blunt.”
“Ah, yes.” Old Man smiles. It almost makes him look like a person and not a patronizing turd. “How fitting.”
Mica and Randy smile, Ollie’s not paying attention, so it’s Wes who has to try to find out if Old Man can be convinced to part with anything else useful.
“Why are they against us?” Wes asks.
“Hmm?” Old Man blinks. “You are many; it’s only natural that they fear you.”
“Four is many?” Ollie asks, one eyebrow climbing up.
