Chapter 22
I stood motionless; my body rooted to the spot by the door frame. Outside, a delicate knock persisted on the old creaking wooden door, each tap echoing in the stillness of the night, creating a haunting melody that resembled the growing discomfort within me.
In desperation to find out, I press my ears against the door, hoping to catch even the faintest whisper of sound that might offer an insight into the identity of the unexpected visitor. It was in the dead of night. The clock, perched high on the wall, displayed the hour of 3:20 a.m., an hour when even the most daring of souls would hesitate to step a foot outside.
Trembling and burdened with nervousness, the words escaped my lips. My voice wavered as I cried out, "Who is it?" I mustered all the bravery I could summon. The brief silence cast an eerie feel that seeped into every corner.
