HER FATHER'S DAUGHTER

I couldn't stop thinking about what just happened. Why did daddy seem like he was trying to avoid Mary?

"Mary, you know dad was the one who dropped us off"

"I know."

"Why didn't you come out to greet him? He's your dad too right?"

"Well Allyson, we didn't have to greet each other."

"Why not?"

"He's the reason I'm here. He's the one who asked me to leave the Gbesinros and move back here"

"Are you for real?"

"Yeah. He's also the one who asked me to go work for the Gbesinros so that you can learn how to do basic chores"

"Wait, I thought grandmother laid you off"

"Well, she didn't hire me in the first place. I was simply helping her since she's the one who raised me"

This conversation was getting interesting. So grandmother knew I made up the story of how I met a madman? And my dad used that opportunity to make me learn how to do chores? Wow ok.

"Anyway, why is Peterson here?", Mary asked.

"He's here to help.", I said.

"That's what grandmother said you told her. Now tell me what he's actually doing here?"

"I don't understand you? He's actually here to help like grandmother said", I replied looking confused.

"Hmm, are you sure there's no other reason he's here?"

The mischievous smile on Mary's face made me realize the dirty thoughts that were going on in her head.

"God forbid! C'mon! Why would you even think like that?" I said in my defense.

"And what am I thinking of? You this bad child?", She asked as she tried not to laugh.

"Weren't you trying to say Peterson's here as my boyfriend or something?"

Immediately, Mary, Peterson and even grandmother burst into laughter. I was surprised and embarrassed too.

"That's not what she meant my dear", Peterson said as soon as he had stopped laughing.

"No stop! Don't call me that", I protested.

"But what exactly did you mean?" I asked Mary.

"Grandmother told me Peterson is one of the keys we need to solve this case. I thought you knew that"

"No, he's just here to help out. I had no idea he was that useful"

"I guess someone should use medicated glasses as soon as possible", Peterson said.

What? So he actually heard everything dad and I said in the car? I couldn't believe it.

"Oh shut up Peter! What do you know?", I yelled.

"I know you have issues with your sight and that's the reason you couldn't see how important I've always been"

Okay Peterson had every right to pay me back in my own coin. Yes, I didn't expect it but I know I deserved it.

"Would you two keep quiet? Peterson my dear, follow Amanda she'll take you to your room. Don't pay attention to Allyson"

Grandmother came to my rescue or else who knew what other bomb Peter wanted to throw at me?

Once they had gone, grandmother said to me.....

"You would need those glasses as that boy just said. Tell me how you can't see what's happening around you?"

"But grandma, you should be on my side"

"I'm on your side and you know it. I'm telling you that this boy has disobeyed his parents just so he can help you with your silly investigation. Now, tell me, what is his motive?"

"I don't know ma. He just volunteered. I couldn't say no"

"Well, it's up to you to find out his true motive."

What could grandmother be trying to say? Was Peterson here with a different motive?

I shook the thought off, as I stood up to unpack my bags.

"Where are you going?" , I asked Mary who was coming out of grandmother's room.

"Grandmother hasn't gone out to shop since you left. There's barely food in this house", Mary said.

"Oh that's true though. I would've done that if not for what happened. Poor grandma. I hope she's been eating well"

"She said she wasn't happy you found out the truth the way you did"

"I am not happy about it too. Mom and dad should've trusted me enough to tell me the truth"

"And you, where are you going?" , Mary asked with an obvious attempt to change the topic.

"Well, I have some unpacking to do" , I said as I pointed to my travel bags.

"Need help?"

"Yes pls"

Mary and I went into my room to unpack my bags. I was glad I bumped into her. She was swift and quick with how she folded and arranged my clothes in order. She was definitely my father's daughter.

"So why Mary? Did grandmother give you that name?"

"No. The name Mary was given to me by the owner of Grace Orphanage"

"Grace Orphanage? How did you end up there?"

"There are lots of secrets that I would love to find out too. I don't know much about that. I was three when grandmother came to adopt me. All I know is the Gbesinros have a hand in it."

"Do you think they dumped you in the Orphanage?"

"I don't think so. I'm certain they did."

"But they said you didn't survive the surrogacy from the beginning. How could they have dumped a baby that was never born?"

"That's because they're lying. I don't have proof yet but I'm sure they're lying to everyone. Even grandmother doesn't know everything that happened eighteen years ago. But the Gbesinros do."

"I can't believe they lied to my face"

"Funny. You sound like you're a VVIP. Those people would do anything to hide their dark secrets. So don't be bothered love"

"Was that the reason you went undercover? To find out the truth from the Gbesinros?"

"Well yeah. I knew if I searched properly, I would be able to find concrete evidence to pin them down for good. But I couldn't. I almost did. I got caught. That was the reason I asked John for help"

"I guess that caused the mean treatment you were receiving"

"Exactly. I tried to cover up with a lie. But you see, I'm not so good at telling lies so they didn't buy it"

"Aww. You have a lot to learn from me you know".

"Silly girl" , Mary said as she smiled at me.

It was a beautiful moment as we talked like normal sisters. Surrogacy or not she was my father's daughter indeed.

And I was glad that I found my sister......
