Chapter 26

Rowan didn’t know how to feel when he got that phone call from Jessica. He was minding his own business at his apartment, reading one of his books. She never called and typically kept her threatening over text messages. There was only one reason she’d be calling him, and that reason was Astrid.

“What happened?!” Jessica shouted over the phone. She sounded panicked and angry, but Rowan had no idea what she was talking about.

“What are you talking about?” Rowan asked.

“Don’t play stupid with me! I know Astrid is in the hospital, I’m her emergency contact.”

Rowan snapped his book shut, sitting straight up in his seat. “Astrid’s in the hospital?”

Jessica was quiet for a few beats. “You really don’t know what I’m talking about?”

Rowan’s silence answered her question.

“D*mn it,” Jessica muttered like she knew something at Rowan didn’t. “Listen, I gotta go.”

“Wait. What hospital? What happened?”
