Chapter-54 Steven's Dilemma

Not long after Drew had departed, a car pulled up to the stately manor's entrance. From it emerged Steven, who was met by one of the mansion's butlers. "Good evening, Mr. Spielberg," he said politely. "The master has been eagerly awaiting your arrival." "Please allow me to escort you to him." With a courteous bow and a sweep of his arm, he indicated the direction they should head. Steven acknowledged her with a nod and followed suit.

As they traversed the expansive backyard, their destination came into view: a charming gazebo perched on the very edge of Point Dume. Within it sat Ric, immersed in the breathtaking ocean vista before him while savoring a cup of tea.

"Is this some kind of rehearsal for an upcoming movie scene?" inquired Steven, taking a seat opposite his friend. He couldn't help but chuckle at the sight.

With feigned innocence and eyes alight with amusement, Ric responded, "Why, no." "I simply desired to indulge myself in the life of nobility for an evening." He paused for effect before adding, "Surprisingly enough, it's quite enjoyable."

Joining in his mirth, Steven retorted, "It certainly seems so—you bear a striking resemblance to a well-bred heir from some aristocratic lineage." Ric took a sip of his tea before smugly declaring his victory with a simple statement: "Then I have succeeded in my portrayal."

Both men shared genuine laughter before the topic turned to more serious matters. "So, why did you invite me here?" Steven wondered aloud. After letting the question hang in the air for a moment, Ric unceremoniously revealed his intentions: "I want you to direct Jurassic Park."

Steven sighed deeply and spoke with some reluctance: "Ric, I'm aware that I previously expressed interest in directing the film." However, there's a script I've been working on that has my full attention.

Yet Ric remained undeterred by the objection. "Ah yes, your Holocaust project?" "The one that none of the studios have greenlit, not to mention the issues with filming locations and negotiations with the Polish government?" Steven could only concede and confirm the validity of his friend's knowledge before explaining that it would be impossible for him to consider Jurassic Park until he had brought his current endeavor to fruition.

This film, however, was far from an ordinary project for Ric. In fact, he had long envisioned its release in 1993 and meticulously orchestrated every aspect of its pre-production. The cast, crew, wardrobe, filming locations, musical score, and even intricate dinosaur models were in place, all arranged to minimize potential disruptions. All that Steven needs to do is show up to film the movie and make occasional appearances during post-production.

But this wasn't merely about producing a successful film. It's the inaugural collaboration between two major visual studios: Lucas's "Industrial Light and Magic" and Ric's "Feather Pixar Visuals." This partnership signifies not only their first venture but also the largest collaboration to date on a high-budget film.

The movie's significance can further be illustrated by looking at its budget in relation to Feather Columbia Pictures; with an estimated price tag of around $80 million, it was unprecedented for any production company to spend so exorbitantly on a single project. This amount even surpasses the budget of all the aforementioned films during this era.

After carefully pondering the situation, Ric finally spoke up, his voice measured and calm: "You know, if I can find a solution to your problem, would you be willing to reconsider your decision?"

Steve, intrigued by the proposition, raised an eyebrow and encouraged Ric to share his thoughts.

Feeling confident that he had Steve's attention, Ric elaborated on his idea: "How about I take on the responsibility of producing your film?" "During the process, I'll engage in discussions with the Polish government to address the issues surrounding your desired filming location." He paused briefly to sip his tea before adding, "And, as an added bonus, what do you say to a small cameo role in the film to sweeten the deal?" He then eagerly asked for Steve's thoughts on his proposal.

Hearing Ric's suggestions prompted Steve to thoughtfully stroke his chin as he weighed the benefits and potential drawbacks of accepting the offer.

After letting some time pass for contemplation, Steve finally admitted with a hint of reluctance, "The schedule may be a bit tight, but I believe it can be accomplished."

Ric eyed him with eager anticipation before asking, "So?" "What do you say?"

"Yes, yes," Steven conceded with a hint of amusement twinkling in his eyes. "You sweet and charming boy—how could I possibly refuse such a generous offer?" "But remember," he added more seriously, "you must hold up your end of the bargain."

Ric nodded solemnly and replied with conviction. "Of course, Godfather." "Allow me to personally invest, oh, let's say, $20 million into your current script." There was a brief pause before he added reassuringly, "And don't worry; I won't ask for anything in return." "Consider it my way of paying tribute to the Holocaust."

Appreciative of Ric's gesture, Steven gratefully responded, "Thank you, Richard." "I promise to make Jurassic Park a tremendous success."

Ric chimed in, a friendly reminder underlining his words: "That's excellent, but don't forget you also need to address the negotiations involving the subsequent production and distribution of your film with Father Columbia Pictures." He added with a good-natured nudge, "I might not demand anything for my contribution, but they certainly will—after all, my employees have to make a living as well."

Before they concluded their meeting, Ric boasted somewhat proudly: "Don't worry; I'll request that they grant you preferential treatment with regards to your film's production."

The two then shared a hearty laugh before raising their teacups in a toast and simultaneously exclaiming, "To happy collaborations!"

Following their agreement, Ric eagerly presented Steven with the script for Jurassic Park and revealed all the intricate details contained within.

The duo then devoted all of the time Steven had left to meticulously comb through and edit the plans, modifying or incorporating elements according to Steven's preferences.

To their mutual surprise, they discovered that there were not many aspects that required alteration. Consequently, by the moment Steven took his leave, the final draft was flawlessly polished and ready for action.

All that remained for him to do was venture forth towards the film's location, acquaint himself with its various settings and characters, and enthusiastically commence the captivating process of bringing this riveting tale to life on screen.

.....

As Steven left the place, Ric let out a deep sigh of relief and sank back into the plush armchair. His mind was racing with excitement as he silently celebrated his victory. With a sly grin, he reached for his phone and dialed a number.

"Hello?" came the voice on the other end.

"He agreed," Ric declared triumphantly.

There was a brief moment of silence on the other end as the news sank in, then a reply came, "Oh! That's a relief."

Ric chuckled. "Of course, some concessions needed to be made."

"Should I be worried?" the voice on the other end asked.

Ric shook his head. "No, not that much. I had to promise my involvement and preferable treatment from the production company for his ongoing project, though," he said with a smirk.

"Consider it done," came the quick reply.

"I knew I could count on you, Amy," Ric said with gratitude.

"Glad to be counted on, Boss," Amy replied with a chuckle. "What about your upcoming film?"

Ric paused for a moment before answering. "Have all the preparations for the film done?"

"Naturally. We could start shooting anytime," Amy replied confidently.

"Hmm... schedule it for next week," Ric said after a moment of contemplation.
