He tried banging against the door one last time, as though sheer desperation would be enough to unbind the chains that had been wound. It wasn't. It wasn't and there was no other way out. Not that they could get to. He needed to save them. To save Jamie . . . but he just couldn't.

Instead, he forced Jamie into his arms, pulling Lucy's unconscious body towards him and reaching for Liam, too. Owen was awake, barley, and he tried to get him to come over. Daisy wasn't moving. He couldn't tell if she was awake or not but he reached for her too. Nobody deserved to die alone.

His arm fell before it could reach the girl. His vision darkened before he could see whether Owen had made his way over.
