Rembering 1: Beginning of the Change

Leo Makai Adams was a second year Business Administration student at the University of Keya. This was one of the best universities in the country and it was a miracle that he was even here.

He looked around the classroom. It wasn't different from other classrooms really. The only difference was that in this university, teachers used camcorders, projectors, computers, smartboards and all the technology you could think of to teach. In short, University of Keya was tech servy.

He was sitting in the last seat at the corner because he wasn't one to make friends. Life had taught him that people, majority at least, only want to befriend you when you have something you can offer. Once you are down and beaten, the same people won't hesitate to

step on you as they rush to the next one who can give them benefits. As such, he had learnt to keep to himself. You could say that Leo was a one man squard.

It was a normal day like any other. Leo woke up early and got ready to go pick his brother from the football academy where he had been for the last two weeks. He was older than his brother by four years but that didn't prevent them from being close.

From the moment Kay Kwanza Adams was born, Leo fell in love and he became over protective of his younger brother. They were as close to each other as a person's two lips. They did everything together and they had no secrets. Leo knew that it was because of spending most of his time with his older brother that made Kay mature for his age.

Thus, Leo had missed his brother and he couldn't wait for them to get him back. He woke his parents early and they had a hasty breakfast and the journey towards the academy, which would take them around forty-five minutes, began.

Since it was the school holiday, all the workers had been given a short leave off work and it was their father who was the driver that day. They got into their Toyota Hilux double cabin vehicle, which was Leo's favourite of all the vehicles their father owned, and their journey began.

Halfway there, as Leo and his mother continued to bicker, the old man felt the breaks fail. He tried everything he could but it was futile. There was a trailer coming at full speed behind them and he couldn't break to avoid the large vehicle. That's when he decided to veer off-road so as to avoid a head on collision and try saving his family.

He tried all he could but the vehicle went off road, hit the side railing on the fly over and plunged to the road below. All Leo could remember was his mother turning to hold him as the vehicle flew and he lost consciousness.

The next moment he came to, he was on a hospital bed with his brother holding his hand with swollen eyes. Apparently, he had been in a comma for two days. Kay smiled when he saw his brother open his eyes and ran to call the doctor. They were both happy when the doctor told them that he could leave the hospital in a few days time because the hit he got on his leg would heal within a month or so. All he got was a cast in his left leg. His mother's hold had cushioned him from fatal injuries.

After asking about his parents, that's when Kay told him that their father died on the spot while their mother was still in a comma with two broken legs, a broken neck, and a severe spine injury. The doctors told them that there was a possibility that their mother would never walk again.

That wasn't even the saddest part of their story. The saddest part was that nobody from their father's family came to visit them. They didn't expect anyone from their mother's family since she was an only child and her parents had already passed on.

They used the little their mother had saved to pay their hospital bills. After four months in the hospital, all her savings were gone. What Leo couldn't understand was why none of their father's workers, either the secretary or the personal assistant were picking their calls.

Leo even tried going to his father's company but he was prevented from going inside by the new guards at the main gate. He tried reaching out to his uncle, his father's only brother, but he too, was MIA. When he visited his uncle's home, the same thing happened: guards prevented him from entering and he was asked to leave a message.

They thus couldn't stay in the hospital longer because they couldn't afford the bills any more and they asked for a discharge but they were to be taking their mother back for check ups and therapy every fortnightly. They were therefore released and they went home.

Leo will never forget the sight that met them when they opened the door to their house.

He was sure a drastic change was going to happen.
