While Meiji wanted to laugh his heart out, he stopped himself because it was not the right place to do so. At the same time, he understood that that was their first mission. Nothing like that had ever happened to them. They were young soldiers without any experience at all.
He was once upon a time just like them, and he knew how terrible and scary it could be, but one thing was for sure: they had not seen the world yet. In a way, the war that broke out was a positive thing.
Meiji and his team kept on moving past all the scraps of war and bodies. Many had facial changes when they came across people with their heads blown up. Some of the young soldiers vomited as it was so depressing and suffocating seeing a member of their group mutilated, some body parts missing, and just dying like that. Meiji had no other way to show he had their backs other than giving them a pat on the back. This was to show them that it was okay not to be okay with the whole thing.
