The flame

I let out a loud war cry and charge first, I can feel my powers surging up like open flames my fire-engine red hair flowing behind me like red flames burning my face and back. As soon as my fist strikes Frost's face, I'm brought back to reality by Professor Holiday.

"Who would like to tell me the last few sentences from this movie? Hmm, perhaps Miss Keegan would like to?"

"Yes sir" I reply and say the last stanza from " O Captain, My Captain" with ease and watch his face turn red with satisfaction. He looks around and says in a harsh voice, "Pay attention people" and starts the movie where it left off. Through the rest of the class I decide to take notes, even though I already know about this poem from doing a paper on it, its better than getting called on to answer questions during class.

What seems like years later, the bell finally rings and we're dismissed for fourth period. As I walk into the hall I see a large group of kids crowded around in a circle and they're all yelling. I inch closer and see the familiar brown-black hair that is normally the target for the bullies at this school, fury floods me like a tidal wave and my vision starts to turn a deep crimson. Before I realize what I'm doing I drop my books and run to the center of the group and my fist collides with some kids face. I keep swinging on them and finally Professor Holiday runs over and pulls me off of a kid I recognize from my Biology class known as Dalton Greene. I dust myself off though I'm sure nothing got on me and I turn to help the brown-black haired boy up off the ground, I reach down and offer my hand he takes it and gasps and lets go

"Um, Miss do you realize that your hand is covered in blood?"

I look down at my hand and realize that he's right and mumble

something unintelligible and offer him my other hand, he looks at me for a second and reluctantly reaches for it and I haul him up off the ground. He looks down seemingly embarrassed he mumbles his thanks as I help him pick up his books.

Professor Holiday walks over and gives me a pointed look and says

"Miss Keegan, Principle Adler's office, now."

"Yes sir" I reply and walk over and grab my school stuff and head toward the main office to await my punishment

As I sit in a metal folding chair, you know the ones that are hard and always cold and uncomfortable? Yeah, I'm sitting in that. Anyway, as I sit in the cold chair waiting for Principle Adler to call me to hear my side of the story, I look over and see Dalton Greene sitting in the nurses office with a bloody nose. I cross my arms with satisfaction, I'm soon called into Principle Adler's office to discuss what happened, since this is the first time I've ever been in trouble, he gave me three weeks in detention.

I walk back to class wondering what would be awaiting me when I got home since I'd have to tell my deranged father why I got detention and why I got into a fight to protect a kid I don't even know. Which would inevitably lead to a lecture on how I should be focused on school and get the " insane notion of becoming a hero" out of my mind and worry about my grades instead. What joy that conversation will be. The rest of the day went by without any complications.

As I get on my bus, I lean my head back on the seat and close my eyes. I sit there trying to block out the feeling of emptiness and the longing to be something more I feel inside ready to burst into flames and blaze hotter than a fire.
