BETA AND THE HEAD WARRIOR

Jason was true to his word, within a few minutes he was back with two men carrying his bags.

"Luna." They both said as they bowed to me.

"No, Alpha." Jason corrected, making me smile.

I knew that they would be confused, the mate of an Alpha was not an Alpha, it was a Luna. She was the mother of the pack. It's heart, it's warmth.

Alphas were too dominant and too headstrong. Having two wolves with an Alpha wolf was dangerous for a pack. One could always challenge the other for control, something no one wanted.

Surprisingly, Jason's men simply nodded at him as they placed his bags down.

"I want to introduce you to some people." Jason said as he extended a hand for me to take.

I smiled at him and took his hand, allowing him to pull me closer to him.

"This my love is my Beta, Adrian, my second in command." Jason said as he nodded for one of them to step forward.

Beta Adrian was a large man with olive skin, as if he stayed under the sun for just the right amount of time.

He was large for a Beta, just as most original pack betas normally were. He was probably the same size as an ordinary alpha and could be one if he chose to be.

"Lu- Alpha." Beta Adrian said as he bowed to me. It seemed that using the title Alpha would take some getting used to for them.

'Maybe we should just tell Jason to let his people call us Luna.' I told my wolf as I observed his mens' struggle.

'He won't like it, you can try, but I can already tell that our mate won't like it.' Ares replied in my head.

"A pleasure to meet you, Beta Adrian." I replied in a pleasant tone as I gave him a kind smile.

"Please, Alpha Amaya, just Adrian, I am your mate's second in command, I am at your service." Adrian explained to me. I guess these men didn't like formality.

"Then I must insist that you simply call me Amaya too." I told him with a smile.

"I don't think my Alpha will approve of that." He responded with a cheeky smile, I already knew this man was trouble the moment he responded that way.

"She's mine." Jason hissed as he wrapped a protective arm around my waist, catching me by surprise. This was not how I expected him to react, but it wasn't abnormal for an Alpha.

Alphas were known for their intense emotions that could only be kept in check by their strength. If any other wolf was ever blessed with how strongly they felt, those wolves would break.

"Jason, I'm yours and yours alone, don't worry." I reminded him as I planted a kiss on his cheek before finally resting my head against his chest.

I felt as his other hand snaked around my waist and held me close. He lowered his head and kissed the top of my head before taking a deep breath, probably to get a whiff of my scent.

Mom told me when I was young that a mate's scent and a mate's touch could calm you, and for Alphas it also helped clear their minds of any biases the intense emotions could lead them to.

I guess it was true, the closer I was to Jason, the calmer I felt.

"I won't take your mate, Alpha." Aiden said with a little bitterness in his tone.

'I wonder what is going on there.' I asked Ares as I observed the interaction between Jason and his Beta.

Traditionally Alphas and Betas were best friends, they would have grown up together, attached to the hip.

I knew that for me it would be either Sage or my brother taking the Beta position, they were people that I could trust with my life.

'Maybe we should ask him later.' Ares suggested in our thoughts. 'I find it quite odd too. If you can't trust your Beta then there is no one you can trust.'

'I agree.' I told Ares as I turned my attention back to what was happening in the room.

Jason had waved for the other man to step forward.

This man was quite different from Adrian, he wasn't largely built, as a matter of fact he reminded me of Sage.

He was the size of an ordinary wolf from an original pack, but something about him told me that he was different. I don't know if it was because of the way he carried himself or because of the way he observed everything in the room.

"This is the head of my warriors at the Silver Moon Pack, Dennis." Jason said as the man bowed to me.

For some reason, Jason seemed kinder and more accepting and trusting of his Head Warrior than to his Beta, which further confused me.

The Head Warrior was fourth in the chain of command and it was rare for them to be so close to their Alphas.

"Alpha." Dennis greeted me.

"I had hoped that I wouldn't have to repeat myself." I said with a chuckle.

"I prefer not to assume, Alpha Amaya." Dennis said as he continued to use my title. It seemed that he had no plans of addressing me informally if I didn't order him.

"Just Amaya, please." I told him with a smile.

"Thank you." Jason said as he finally released me from his arms. "We will see you at dinner tonight, yes?" He asked his men who simply nodded in reply.

"Good, good, now if you let me and my mate have some time alone, I would appreciate it." Jason told them as the two men turned their backs and left the room, closing the door after them.

I felt my cheeks redden as he said those words, it was clear what he wanted, but would we have enough time?

Dinner was in an hour and I wasn't sure I wanted to walk into the dining hall freshly mated for all the guests to smell and sense.
