Hel and the Emerald Sky City

[Mature Content] ||| This is a fantasy soulmates romance set in an Urban setting with lots of deeply traumatic backstories and many deaths on the way, in a magical ancient academy, and with one of the main plots being revenge. There are countless types of mythical creatures and all coexisting in our very world. ||| Torture is all I’ve known for two thousand years. Not because I’m the one causing it, which ain’t the case, but because since the old reptile, Dragon Queen Meredith Bloom and her daughter in law, Crowned Princess Philippa Bloom kidnapped me from my mother when I was 7 years old, and killed her in front of me, I’ve been treated like a material she absolutely despised but wanted to make a weapon with. All because I’m the bastard daughter of the Crowned Prince Russell Frederick Bloom, the “holy-golden-dragon” with my mom, a black dragon extremely powerful who worked directly with the Dragon Queen and King as the Royal blacksmith and stylist. Which baffles me even more is that mother and Russell were mates, but as dear grandma there didn’t want a black dragon to mate with her precious golden son, she terrorized my mom when she learned of their affair and made sure her son married a female golden dragon of high birth right away. That’s where Philippa Pepper Wreathers-Bloom comes into the picture. She got engaged to my birth father before mother could even have me, and as soon as she had me on the territory now known as New Zealand, she ran away to her family’s original territory on the Himalaya Mountain Range. Which is where she made her lair and raised me for 7 years, in physical age. That is, until dear grandma came and ended our short-lived happiness. Aye, key detail. Mom and dad were both dragons, of different founding clans but both dragons, nevertheless, I came out weird and I’m not a dragon at all, I’m something else entirely, though still in the reptile family. Which is another reason why Meredith tortured the shite out of me. If there was something she despises more than having a bastard in her perfect Royal bloodline, is having a bastard who’s an error in the system (not my choice of words, hers), something that’s only been heard in legends of the long gone old world. What are you then, Hel? I’m a serpent. But not just a serpent, I’m a gigantic black serpent with emerald scales here and there (which Meredith is to blame for), long and wide bat-like wings, with sapphire eyes, and silver sharp fangs full of a very lethal poison. ||| English is not my first language.

I can't find my mate.

Of course, she would go wander around when she was expulsed from class after she made a clown out of the professor, which may have been shocking, but was amusing as hell. I still don't quite understand what she meant by saying all of that, but our confusion obviously pissed her off, which made her even more beautiful. And I felt pissed off for not being able to understand what she said, and because she was pissed, and because she keeps going from hot to cold to hot to cold again.

When she said all that, I was confused, but deep in my bones I knew she wasn't making that shite up. Something deep inside me told me she knew exactly what she was saying and that the threat she mentioned was real. That we should hear her warning before it's too late.

But it's hard to do that when she refuses to explain it further.

And the way Felix was acting all anxious and exasperated? Very suspicious. Though it made me angry, because he knows what I don't. And this jealousy is consuming me, because she told him and refuses to tell me. I don't give two shites if he's her cousin or not, I don't like it. But I can't do anything because she would get mad at me.

Really mad, not flirt-ish mad, and I don't want that.

So, after warden Atticus came to our class, with weapon he didn't have it before, and I'm sure he bought from my mate, and told us professor Marja-Leena Eskola of Advanced Biology of the Primordial Races, with whom we were supposed to have two classes in sequence, was going to be absent and we were free for the next two hours, I got all anxious.

"Warden Atticus," I called him before he could leave, "did you see Hel after she left the class?"

"Oh, yes," he grinned when the professor left the class, "she was angry, cursing the professor, you all and all of your ancestors and future descendant for being so dumb and clueless and refuse to listen to reason."

Rio choked behind me, and Felix covered his mouth worried, "She didn't get into a fight with anyone, right?" He asked and we all turned to him. "If she loses her cool and the control of her magic again, it won't be good, especially if I'm not there to nullify her magic."

"She might end up almost killing someone," Yumi mumbled.

But the warden just grinned, "She has more control than you all can possibly think. And no, she didn't get into a fight. When I met her, she was cursing you to her Wolpertinger, who seemed to be agreeing with her, if his expressions meant anything." He showed us he new emerald baton, "Then I bought this from her after I saw Rio's post on Eclipse, which she cursed you for doing it, and then she said something about exploring the Castle while none of you dumbasses were near her." Probably me.

"Thank you, warden," both I and Felix said at the same time, then we glared at each other.

"No problem, kids," then he left.

I gulped, "It's been more about 40 minutes, she doesn't know the Academy grounds, something might have happened to her."

To my surprise, Felix agreed, "And she's angry. Besides, she still hasn't told us what she meant by what she said earlier. She's probably trying to avoid us because she knows we'll press it down."

"And what was all of that about?" Irene gasped. "26 people. 12 will die. That was eerie as hell, especially when she said her mother told it to her. Wasn't her mom dead? I'm really starting to get freaked out!"

Felix sighed, "I may be wrong, but I think Hel meant her spirit."

"What?" Rio asked and we all turned to Felix.

"Hel is able to control spiritual energy. She can see, talk, and even touch spirits she has an emotional connection to. Her mom falls into that. I think she superficially mentioned something about having met her mom a little before she came to the Academy," he said it all staring at me.

"Why are you telling us all of that?" Priya arched her eyebrows.

"Hel is now my best friend, we come in a package, and we are tied together, liking it or not," he grinned. "Now that you're her mate."

I crossed my arms over my chest, "I don't like you, Gabriel."

"I don't like you either, Sean, but Hel is with me, and your mating bond is unbreakable, so, it seems like our hands are tied. No matter if she wants to break the bond, we all know that will not happen," he looked away. "Let's try texting her. If she doesn't answer we got after her!"

"Alright, let's do that," I agreed with him for a change.

Me: Babe, where are you?

Me: Next two periods are free.

Me: Professor won't be able to make it.

Me: Hel? Where are you, babe?

Me: Talk to me, Hel, please.

Me: I'm worried.

Twenty minutes passed and nothing. Not on me, not on Felix, even less on the others who also tried to send her a message just to make sure she was okay. Nothing at all. Not even a word. We tried to search for her all around the Castle, but none of us got anything, which freaked me out.

"Do something!" Felix yelled at me, nervous, as we met again.

I glared at him, "Why don't you do something? I'm trying here."

He glared back, "You are her mate. Do something. Use the bond to locate her or something. We all tried to find her, it didn't work. But you has this connection, so use it."

"How am I supposed to do that, genius? It's my first time!"

Felix clenched his jaw, ignoring as all of my friends of the Circle surrounded me, guarding my back. "You've see the mating bond thread, no? When it snapped into place."

"Yes. We both see it every time I touch her skin. Why?"

Sigh, "I read in a book that if you visualize it and grab onto it, you will be able to always find your mate no matter where they are. I don't know if it works, but," he pointed to me with his green nails, "do your things. If it does work, we'll follow you."

To think I would be following Felix's advice. Sigh.

Handing my iPad to my baby brother, I closed my eyes, visualizing out incandescent emerald thread again, it made me feel like freezing and burning, alive, and when I held out my hands to grab it, I felt my power exploding, overflowing, covering everything. Beyond all that, I felt a grasp in the other side of the thread that's binding us together.

The breathtakingly refreshing feeling brought her scent to me, the rich mixture of fresh roses, cinnamon and winter. Gulping, I followed it, my body and soul desperate to get to her, to hold her again, to touch her, to do so much more. Feeling everything burn inside of me, I held onto our mating bond praying for the Crone that she isn't harmed.

And after what felt like centuries, my feet stopped. When I opened my eyes again, I found myself in the underground of the Castle, in front of a enormous double marble door slightly opened, all of it's seven locks on the ground, broken with magic. "Did any of you ever knew of this place?"

All the twenty-four people behind me, counting Felix, tensed up, and I knew the answer before the idiot said it, "No. My lair in also here on this underground floor, but it's on the total opposite direction."

"How did she even find this place?" Agost gasped behind us.

"Especially when none of us even knew about it," River added.

Walking closer to the door, I held one of the locks, "She broke in," I chuckled. "I don't know how she did it but she broke all these seven locks just to get inside this place."

"Eerie much?" Felix squeaked. "I can feel green flame inside, it's the same I have it. She must have used to lighten whatever this place is."

"There's music playing," Danielle and Sabrina, the two sirens, said at the same time, which I could tell already.

Sigh, "If you're scared, stay behind me, I'll go inside first!" Then I stepped inside of the place, and instantly noticed the lightened chandelier in the ceiling glowing with green flame, countless sheets on the ground, and countless painting I've never seen before hanging in the never-ending walls. "A gallery?" I mumbled.

"How did we never knew this was here?" Savannah gasped.

But then we saw it, Hel floating three meters above the ground, Jack euphoric flying around her, as if he was desperate. The closer I got, I noted she wasn't moving at all, her phone in her back pocket playing non-stop Skyfall by Adele on repeat.

"Hel?" I called for her, but there was no reaction. When Jack saw us, he flew straight to me, as if wanting to tell me something. "Calm down, Jack, we can't hear you, boy."

He growled as if annoyed, and kept glaring at me, at us.

"Wait," propelling myself up, I went to her, but before I could touch her, Jack appeared in front of me, and made a sound similar to barking.

"Jack," Felix called from the ground, "we can't understand you."

But he didn't calmed out, and it was starting to freak me out. That is, until he screamed at us, ["You are a bunch of useless bloody fucking wankers. Can't you even understand a word I'm saying? Arseholes. That's why Hel keeps cursing you all, because you are stupid, weak, useless, and don't even listen to her when she's trying to warn you all in the means she can. But no, you bloody bastards think you know everything of this damn world, which is definitely not the fucking case!"]

"Don't hold back," I scoffed, "tell us how you feel!" He froze.
