The Divorce Case

Interestingly, Su Jian didn't react when she saw the phone number. It was a little too far-fetched to think that she would have absolutely zero recognition of his number, wasn't it?

"Hello, who is this?" Jin Pingchuan pretended not to recognize Su Yinian's phone number.

"It's Su Yinian," came Su Yinian's calm voice.

As Jin Pingchuan admired Su Jian's elegant way of eating, he smiled and said, "Sorry, I forgot to save your phone number."

"That's okay, sir. I called to ask if you are available tomorrow..." Su Yinian paused, but Jin Pingchuan remained silent. Su Yinian continued, "If you help me win this divorce lawsuit, I can double the lawyer's fee..."

Jin Pingchuan smiled faintly. It wasn't about the money. He couldn't help his love rival regain his freedom for a meager sum and then let him snatch his wife!

"It's not about the money." Jin Pingchuan pondered for a moment before saying, "I'm a little busy at the moment and can't attend to other matters for now. It seems like you're in a hurry to settle this matter. How about this? Let's find time next week to sit down and meet in person. I'll do my best to assist you. After all, you were recommended by my teacher..."

In the corporate world, this was a subtle form of rejection.

On the other end of the phone, Su Yinian sat at his desk. The office was quiet, and even Su Yinian's childhood friend, Lin Feng, could overhear the conversation. Lin Feng frowned and said, "This guy Jin Pingchuan is quite arrogant. He doesn't even want to accept double the legal fees. Is he trying to demand an exorbitant price?"

Seated across from Lin Feng, Su Yinian's special assistant, Dong, replied, "Before I went to meet Jin Pingchuan, I inquired about him. He's always been stubborn when it comes to taking cases." After a pause, Dong continued, "I heard that when he first entered the field, he handled all sorts of cases, especially divorce cases. Later on, as his reputation grew, he became more selective. He rarely handles ordinary civil cases personally. He focuses on financial, foreign-related, international trade, and intellectual property lawsuits. He has even taken on a few criminal cases. Challenging him in court is like a fish crossing the river."

Lin Feng pursed his lips. "I don't believe we can't win the divorce case without Jin Pingchuan!"

"I didn't say that it would be impossible. It's just going to be quite troublesome. There's no quick way to resolve it," Dong said.

"But didn't Jin Pingchuan mention he's been busy lately?" The more Lin Feng thought about it, the angrier he became. "As far as I know, he goes back to Lingnan City every weekend to stay with his grandparents. Besides taking care of his illegitimate daughter, he doesn't have much else to do. If he were sincere, he could have arranged to meet immediately, but he insists on delaying it until next week. Isn't it clear that he doesn't want to take the case?"

Lin Feng fell silent.

Su Yinian remained motionless. He was lost in his own thoughts.

Jin Pingchuan watched as Su Jian put down her knife and fork. She picked up her fruit juice and drank it slowly. The restaurant wasn't particularly quiet, so she couldn't hear the conversation on the other end of the phone.

Jin Pingchuan didn't know much about Su Yinian. Their work focuses and cities were different. Su Yinian had called him today because Jin Pingchuan's university teacher had introduced him at a cocktail party some time ago. During their brief conversation, Su Yinian had mentioned needing his help with a lawsuit.

The party was noisy, so they didn't discuss the matter in detail. Jin Pingchuan only found out today that the lawsuit Su Yinian was referring to was actually a divorce case.

Based on what Jin Pingchuan knew, Su Yinian and his wife, Qin Xinxin, had a harmonious relationship and a son. There had been no signs of their marriage falling apart in the Su family recently. So why did Su Yinian suddenly want a divorce? Moreover, the fact that Su Yinian sought him out suggested that he believed it would be difficult to proceed with the divorce. Something didn't add up.

Before he could dwell on it further, Jin Pingchuan was surprised when Su Jian insisted on splitting the bill with him at the restaurant!
