Will had been on edge the entire time Hazel was away, especially since the private investigator's contract was up as soon as she was supposed to come back to Utah. That storm ruined everything.
She was off on the other side of the country dealing with who knows what by herself! How was he not supposed to be nervous about that? Especially after she picked up the phone dead drunk, seeming to be separated from whoever she had been drinking with.
Later she explained that the drinking games had gotten a bit intense at Eva's sister's bachelorette party, which eased his nerves only somewhat. Eva clearly wasn't taking very good care of her.
Hazel may be wary of others but she was so tiny and defenseless that she could be an easy target to anyone with ill will when her guard was down. Being drunk alone was dangerous.
