Chapter 5: Gold, Robes, and Books!
Alan followed closely behind Hagrid towards the counter, looking around curiously.
There were about a hundred goblins or so, sitting on high stools behind their counters. Some were weighing coins with copper scales, others examined gems with some eyepiece, and the rest wrote hasty entries in the ledger.
There were countless doors in the bank, leading to several different places, and many goblins were guiding others in or out of those doors.
Hagrid stopped near an idle goblin who was busy scribbling something down but stopped and looked at them for a moment before Hagrid opened his mouth.
"Mr. Alan Potter would like to open his vault," Hagrid said a bit too seriously which ended up only sounding a bit awkward.
The goblin behind the counter leaned forward slightly.
"And does Mr. Potter have his Key?" The goblin asked Hagrid scrutinizingly.
Hagrid thought awkwardly for a moment before responding. "Uh, Ye'h got it here somewhere..." and started rummaging through his pockets for a while before finding it.
"Her'e it is." Hagrid handed the key to the goblin who slowly examined it and then nodded.
After that the same plot from the original world started, Hagrid failing at being secretive, Going down to both the Potter Trust vault and vault 713 for a totally inconspicuous-looking rock.
Eventually, the Goblin started explaining the wizarding world's economy which for the most part was probably the most convoluted way to use it, which made Alan's brain stop to think for a moment before it clicked in his mind.
One galleon was 17 in Sickles and 493 for Knuts
One sickle would be 29 in Knuts and, 0.05882... in Galleons
And one knut would be 0.03448... in Sickles and 0.002028... in Galleons.
'Totally not confusing at all I will definitely remember all of this horse shit!' Alan thought sarcastically in his mind about the stupidity of Wizards when it came to such things.
After confirming the number of galleons in his magically expanded pouch, Alan and Hagrid left Gringotts.
After leaving Gringotts, Alan and Hagrid headed towards the nearest shop to buy a trunk at Alan's insistence.
He really didn't know why people bought it last when it could come in handy in caring all the shit you bought.
Alan shook his head in exasperation.
After obtaining a magical trunk, Hagrid led Alan directly towards Madam Malkin's robe shop, which was not far away.
"Alan, you can buy yer uniforms here, you shou'ld be able to hand'le yerself from here and you know what ye need from the list, Right?"
Hagrid asked with a smile.
Hearing Hagrid's question, Alan returned the smile and nodded.
"Of course, first-year students need three sets of plain black work robes, a plain black peaked hat for daytime wear, a pair of dragon skin protective gloves, and a black winter cloak with silver buckles."
"Oh, and all the clothing must have name tags!" Alan hurriedly added.
"You've got a great memory like ye said."
After hearing Alan's answer, Hagrid smiled with satisfaction.
"I'll need to get ye a couple of other things, so once you've gotten yer robes, head to Flourish and Blotts hen walk towards Ollivander's to get yer wand."
He pointed towards two shops in the same lane not far from where they were standing.
Alan nodded and walked into Madam Malkin's robe shop, while Hagrid left to get him his other supplies.
As soon as he entered the robe shop, a short and plump woman wearing a purple embroidered robe greeted him warmly with a sweet smile.
"Hogwarts dear?" She asked tentatively...
"Yes, I'm a new freshman this year."
Alan responded politely.
Madam Malkin led him to the back of the shop, where she had him stand on a footstool and put a gown on him, pinning it to the right length.
Then she measured his arm length and shoulder length. Before asking a couple of questions about what kind of materials he'd like the robes to be made out of.
After a long time of work, Madam Malkin finally said. "There we go dear, here are your clothes."
After paying for the uniforms, Alan thanked her and left the robe shop and started walking towards Flourish and Blotts.
While he could've gone towards Ollivander's first and gotten his wand, he still has alot of time to explore, which for one, he'd rather go read, unlike in the original work. He wanted to understand everything there was about this world and of course, magic.
HECK he wanted to one day make his own fricking magic.
In his previous life, if there was thing he was obsessed with, it was the occult and such. He had a lot of whimsical ideas from media and such, so he really wanted to see if they would work in this world, as magic tended to be more idealistic.
When he arrived at the bookstore, the first thing he did was look at the shelves.
They were filled to the ceiling with books, ranging from leather-bound books as large as paving slabs to silk-bound books as small as postage stamps.
'How peculiar.'
There were also other weird books, one with all kinda of strange symbols and a few books with no words whatsoever, maybe there was some kind of activation code?
Looking at these strange and wonderful books, Alan had a momentary impulse to buy the entire bookstore.
However, he gave up this crazy idea for the time being, After all. He still didn't understand shit of wizarding financing!
He decided to browse through some books, but first, he needed to purchase the books for his up-and-coming first year.
While he could just buy the from year one to year seven, he'd rather browse some now, memorize some important spells, and wait until he arrived at Hogwarts to read on.
Hogwarts already had one of the biggest libraries in the wizarding world.
While he wanted a lot to buy a lot of these books, he also wanted to preserve his money for later on in case he started researching some kind of obscure magic or wanted to create something entirely new.
With a shrug, Alan continued on.
He rummaged through the shelves and found the books described in the list.
The Standard Book of Spells, Elementary, By Miranda Goshawk.
A History of Magic, by Bathilda Bagshot.
Theory of Magic, by Adalbert Waffling.
A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration, By Emeric Switch.
One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi, By Phyllida Spore.
Magical Drafts and Potions, By Arsenius Jigger
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, By Newt Scamander.
The Dark Forces: A Guide To Self-Defense, By Quentin Trimble.
Because Flourish and Blotts provide a book delivery service via Owl, Alan decided to buy a few extracurricular books.
Hogwarts: A History (of course)
A Study of The Development of Modern Wizardry
And lastly, Great Wizards of the 20th Century.
Most of these extracurricular books are historical biographies. For Alan, these books can give him a general understanding of the magical world, rather than just relying on the tip of the iceberg of information he knew from his previous life.
After paying for these books, Alan went back to the bookshelves to read a couple more books before heading towards Ollivander's.
