“Maybe just chalk it up to experience, hey?”

I felt my face grow cold, but I nodded. “Okay.”

Orestes pointed to the chair in the corner. “I got your clothes, by the way. They were upstairs, nicely washed and ironed.” He chuckled. “Anatole’s good at that sort of thing.”

So, I got dressed and left, all without exchanging another word with Orestes.

Once outside, however, my knees grew weak and I had to sit down on the basement steps. I sat there a long time, my head in my hands, my mind a bleak wasteland. Then, taking a deep breath, I climbed the stairs to the landing where the backdoor lead outside, and let myself out.
