Chapter 20

I looked up at the tree; it was not glowing green, but an array of colors. Red, Teal, Green, and White. Talila was still floating over me. I closed the book and put it away. I needed to focus more on training and getting stronger. I grabbed Talila and put it around my neck.

"Talila? Are you still there?"

"Of course I am silly, we are stuck for life! Buddy, ol' pal, a friend of mine!" Talila cheerfully remarked.

"What's with you?" I asked suspiciously.

"Why?" She giggled.

"You're acting weird . . ." I muttered.

"What do you mean?" She asked innocently

"You're too friendly . . . I mean I like the change from your sarcastic unpredictable self,"

"Now I feel I should go back to the sarcasm, it made things more interesting, do you think?" She asked.

"Really?" I sighed

"Really." She stated.

Suddenly, I saw movement through the glass; I recognized the broad figure that approached me. They opened the door, "Ryoko," I greeted him with a grin. "How did you get up here?" I asked, patting the floor beside me.

He sat beside me, a slight blush on his face. "After you left upstairs there was a bright flash, we were all worried. I wanted to make sure you were ok," he answered.

"You mean that?" I laughed.

"Yeah," he mumbled, looking away.

I reached over and gave his head a little nudge, making him look at me again. "Don't worry about me okay?" I asked.

"If you say so," he murmured, smiling weakly.

"Come on, let's go down!" I exclaimed as I jumped to my feet, extending my hand towards him. He looked up in surprise, then slowly grabbed my hand. Once he stood, he immediately pulled me into a hug.

"You have no idea how happy I am to see you back," he whispered in my ear.

I smiled.

I had no idea how long it took to get downstairs, but when we finally came down they were all smiling, and talking happily.

"You did it! You did it!" Kaida cheered loudly as she hugged me. "And, the amulet has been restored to its original form!" she exclaimed as she pulled away.

"Oh my god! That is incredible! I'm so happy for you!" Tatsuya gushed excitedly. This was the happiest I have ever seen her be since she has always been so serious.

The relief of having half my journey home completed flooded through me. This was my second home; the place where everything went right.

As we celebrated, we were interrupted by the sound of heavy footsteps approaching from behind us. I turned around to see two women standing with tears in their eyes.

"Mom?" Kaida, Tatsuya, and Ryoko shouted. The women rushed forward to give them hugs and kisses. When they pulled away, one of them looked at Tatsuya and Kaida in amazement, as if they couldn't believe that the two sisters standing before them were their daughters.

"Mom!" Ryoko cried. She rushed forward and wrapped her arms around him. "I missed you so much!"

"What's going on here?" Mom asked as she glanced around at the group.

"She's the guardian, we're trying to help her stop the war and to face Tanwen!" Kaida explained while pointing to me. I tried my best to hide the fact that I was crying as well.

One of the women approached me, reaching out and embracing me tightly. "I don't know why," she cried as tears ran down her face, "but I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate you!"

she said as she hugged me tighter.

"Thank you." replied.

After everyone calmed down, Mom began talking.

"Where is Zaya?" she inquired. Everyone went silent and stared at me, waiting to hear my reply.

"She's . . . dead," I told her bluntly. I expected a reaction, but there wasn't one; not any kind of expression on her face whatsoever. It made me wonder how she could remain calm about it all. After a few seconds of silence, she nodded her head.

"Where are we headed next?" I asked.

"We should head back to the village, it's been a while and we have to start helping you train," Kaida suggested. I agreed. We walked out of the building.

"Why were you in the Verboten valley?" I asked. Both women took a long sigh before looking at each other and then back at me.

"12 years ago we left the village before the war to retrieve the unknown. The only way to bring the amulet back into one without its guardian." One lady.

"The unknown?" I asked.

"Isn't that thing a myth," Tatsuya replied.

"We thought so too until the day of the battle. After we got lost we ended up in the middle of nowhere and saw some strange markings and symbols painted on the ground. The marks seemed to glow red and we could hear chanting coming from the trees. We followed the voices, they led us to the river which flowed in a deep valley. When we got there, the only sign that anything even remotely like magic existed was a large black tree next to the stream." The other woman explained.

"So you both came from there?" I asked.

"It seems so; however when we went to go back home something strange happened," the taller woman sighed, "when we got back, everything was exactly the way we left. The village was destroyed and everything that wasn't trampled was burned. No signs of anyone living or dying. Nothing but silence and ashes. We stayed hidden there till morning. That's when we heard the voices again. The voices led us to a giant black tree that we'd seen before. The tree started glowing and brought us here and brought us to this ancient temple." The lady explained, pointing to the temple.

"But you've been here for 12 years! How did that play out." Ryoko questioned.

"We've been living in peace over the years, but now we are ready to go home. But we should go and collect a few resources for a couple of days." The other replied.

She's right for the past few days the group has been running on adrenaline, and that can only last us so long.

"Okay," I nodded.

...

The women led us to where they'd been living for 12 years. Two small huts high above the ground with big leaves covering the top and wood all around.

There was a garden with vegetables, rice, herbs, and fruits growing wild and healthy all by themselves. I was amazed. They placed the items they gathered inside a basket before they entered the huts.

A few minutes later they came out with saddles woven with leaves, and baskets.

"Mom, why do you have a saddle?" Kaida asked.

"Kai my dear remember when I told you about unicorns?" Her mom replied.

"Yeah, they don't exist," Kaida stated.

"Scratch that idea," Her mom tittered.

Ryoko's mom whistled and a stampede of red, pink, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple unicorns ran towards us. They stopped when Ryoko's Mom whistled once more.

Six unicorns stepped forward, a green, two purple, and three blue: they lowered their heads, allowing women to start putting straddles on them. Once they were secured, each lifted their head and walked steadily to each one of us. They bowed down, and the women did so too; each of us did the same. We climbed up the horses, while both of the women packed the baskets onto the unicorns.

"How are we getting out of here?" Kida's mom asked.

"We head north and so on," Tatsuya replied.

"Still as serious as ever, huh" Her mom joked. Tatsuya let out a soft chuckle. Ryoko's mom started moving; all the other unicorns started following her as well.

Headed out on our journey into a huge clearing filled with beautiful plants of every shape and size: flowers, bushes, grass, fruit trees, and other various kinds of vegetation. There was no path anywhere.

"It's amazing here. Where do those other things come from?" Krios asked.

"They're native to here. They help us grow things and provide food. Others live outside this forest." Kaida's mom replied. We walked further into the thick forest.

We saw every mythical creature known to humans, not elves. I bet they've seen them thousands of times. I am starting to wonder I haven't seen Krios owl in awhile and hes doing pretty fine for someone how lost a pet unexpectedly.
