Family dinner

After walking for a few more minutes they both reached home. They both didn't say a single word but unlike the creepy silence, this silence felt more relatable.

When they entered the house Ellen and Layla were setting the dinner table. When they saw Eren and Claude entering the house, they asked them to go clean themselves.

After coming down they both sat at the dining table. Claude wanted to eat his dinner in his room like usual but seeing the puppy stare he got from Ellen and Eren he gave up. They even asked Layla, who usually eats dinner with me in my room to join us.

After a bit of time Amber along with Ares came down to join the dinner. Everyone, even Eren, looked at Claude with a worried expression but Claude only gave Amber a glance and kept answering the child-like questions to Ellen.

Amber wanted to have her dinner in her room, seeing that Claude didn't even pay attention to her. She was inwardly glad that he at least didn't refuse the idea of having dinner with Amber but she still wanted to be safe. But Ares didn't allow her to have dinner in her room and forced her to sit with everyone.

The dinner was served but only the males were eating the food without any care of the world. The females all had distressed expressions, Amber because of Claude, Layla because of Amber while Ellen because of the behaviour of all the males.

Noticing the awkward silence which ruled over the room, Claude was the first one to speak :-

" Is it a custom of this village to look for a wife at such a young age, lord father." He asked Ares.

" Well, from the founding of the empire. The high-ranking nobles used to marry their children with either the subordinate families or other high-ranking nobles. They don't believe in things called love. They used to marry their children on papers so that they could profit from each other and after their children reach the age of 15 they used to hold proper ceremonies. They are still following these customs." He continued while putting a slice of beef in his mouth.

" Seeing them and understanding them, merchants also started to marry their children in similar fashion. Peasants and commoners did the same thing in a simple way, they started to teach their children to go after a girl from childhood."

" It's not a bad thing actually. Most of the marriages in the village happen between the residents of the village anyway, so why not decide marriage from early on. More than 90% of this and any village's population marries together. It also helps to avoid villages turning dead." He finally concluded.

" I thought marriage was something complicated." Claude said with a pondering look.

" Boy, nothing in this world is complicated if you get used to it. Even a slave becomes numb to pain when he gets used to it. You get experience in short." He said not paying more attention to the topic.

" Then you have a lot of experience in marriage right, dad ? After all, you have two wives." This time Eren said he did not want to be left out of conversation.

" Hah !! Women are just like swordsmanship, as long as you know the opponents moves, winning is a child's play." Ares said still not paying attention to conversation.

Ares felt two stinging glares and when he looked up he saw both Ellen and Amber staring daggers at him like he was a dead man. After that only did he notice the blunder he had made.

" Dear, I think we have something important to talk about after dinner." Ellen said with a smile which did not reach her eyes.

" Yes, darling, we should really talk about that important matter today itself." Amber spoke for the first time after sitting on the dining table.

Ares had a look of despair on his face. He looked in the direction of Eren the reason behind this mess. Eren didn't even pay complete attention to the conversation and kept eating his food. Layla was also focused on her food.

Ares looked at Claude, the reason behind this conversation. Claude noticed Ares' gaze but he simply shaked his head but he held back his laughter.

' Bastard!!'

Ares resigned himself to his fate. After all, no man in this entire universe was ever able to win a war against women.

" Claude used magic today !!" Eren suddenly remembered today's day and said with excitement.

" Oh, what magic did you use ?" Ares was interested in this topic more than his own well being.

" Water magic, " Claude replied in a single word.

" Which spell ?" Ares asked.

" Water ball, " Claude replied.

" Yeah, it was so strong it destroyed three whole trees."

When Eren said this everyone present in this room widened their eyes. Especially Ares and Amber who had more magic knowledge than common people.

" Is what he said true ?" Ares asked, calming his excitement.

" They were wasted trees, what's so special about them ?" Claude asked with a confused look.

" How did you do that ? I mean did you just casted it or did something else." Ares asked.

" No, I casted the spell and made the water compress and spin with additional mana. Then I threw it with high pressure with additional mana. Though it took a lot of my mana away, I think with slight modifications I will be able to use it more easily." Claude said, this is something Claude noticed but whenever he talks about magic and mana related stuff the conversation changes into a one sided speech.

Ares and Amber stared at each other for some time. Ares was the first one to let out a sigh.

" It seems both of my son's are geniuses." He said with a smile.

" Why ?" Claude asked with distress because he thought that he might have revealed something related to Awaken.

" Because what you did is something called mana control. Using mana according to your will is something only tier 4 and saint ranks can do. And only few can use it with more than one element and here you are using it on not just the first element but also your first spell. Not calling you a genius will be a shame on me and Amber who are considered talented." He said.

Claude inwardly sighed, he was worried that no one can use it but it seems like it is something taught not learned.

" Dad, how am I a genius ?" Eren asked, jealous because even though Ares called him a genius he didn't explain it like he did with Claude.

" You are a genius because you can make the sword your own." He continued.

" Everyone uses the sword as a weapon but unlike them you use your sword as an extra limb and if you keep training you might even become one with a sword. All the people in this world who have become one with the sword are called geniuses." Ares explained, though Eren didn't understand much of it he still liked being called a genius.

" What if you have a talent for magic before 10 ?" Claude asked as he noticed another new deep brown streak on Erens mana core.

" Even if I have a talent for magic I will still follow the path of swordsmanship. Though magic is cool and all, I don't think it will give me a thrill. Standing in a single spot and weaving spells is boring when you can pick a sword and enjoy the fight, truly fighting it. You can say it is something about aesthetics." Eren explained.

" I also think that Eren is more suitable for swordsmanship and you are more suitable for magic. Eren has an unbreakable will which doesn't allow him to give up easily while I don't think you have that but you have that thirst for knowledge which Eren clearly lacks." Ares said to Claude.
