"If keeping a kind heart means I can't protect myself, then what use is kindness to me? Mu Zuochen, I'm not worth your concern."
Gu Yicing coldly shrugged off Mu Zuochen's hand and firmly moved to a seat further back.
Mu Zuochen sat in silence, clenching his fists, his heart weighed down by a sense of frustration and helplessness. He hadn't wanted things to turn out this way between them.
Where had it all gone wrong?
After school that afternoon, Gu Yicing quickly slipped out of the classroom, heading straight out of the campus. She carried the damaged storage card from her computer with her, visiting several shops in the hope of recovering her lost data. Unfortunately, no one could repair it. The card's failure meant the loss of years of accumulated client data and medical records. Although her exceptional memory allowed her to recall much of the information, reconstructing it all would require a significant amount of time.
But Gu Yicing didn't have the luxury to dwell on her frustrations.
She made her way to a computer mall and selected a sleek, white ultrabook with the highest available specs for memory and processing power. After purchasing the new laptop, she headed to a nearby café, ordered a coffee, and sat down to set up her new device. As she connected to the internet, she quickly downloaded the essential software and logged into her accounts.
One of her first stops was the medical alliance task group she was a part of, where she posted a simple emoji, signaling her presence.
That single message immediately sparked a flurry of responses.
The group consisted of top medical professionals from all around the world, bound together by a shared commitment to saving lives. None of them knew what the others looked like or cared about their social status. What mattered was their ability to heal—and to charge those who could afford it hefty sums for life-saving treatments.
Gu Yicing, known as "Ghost Hand," was one of the youngest members of the alliance, and the others in the group—whether brothers, sisters, uncles, or aunts—had always looked out for her.
[Doctor Celestial Grace]:"Ah, Ghost Hand finally showed herself! What have you been up to lately? You've left a new task hanging for days. It's a 1.5 million yuan bounty, and we're all green with envy! We tried to take it, but the client insisted on waiting for you. The frustration is real."
[Little Healer]:"Celestial Grace, please. No matter how fancy a name you pick, it doesn't hide the fact that you're a big burly guy. Which patient would trust you to treat them? At least our Ghost Hand is cute and soft. Patients aren't blind, you know."
[Doctor Celestial Grace]:"The medical alliance isn't some beauty contest. Clients don't know what we look like when they place orders."
[Benevolent Heart]:"But returning clients definitely know whether you're a person or a ghost, right?"
[Doctor Celestial Grace]:"Ouch! That hurt. Maybe I should place my own order in the alliance for some plastic surgery? This world is too cruel for us who don't have good looks."
Reading the banter from the group, Gu Yicing couldn't help but cover her mouth and laugh.
This group of medical professionals was truly a bunch of lovable clowns.
But Gu Yicing didn't have time to join in on the playful chat. She quickly navigated to the task board and claimed the high-paying job that had been waiting for her.
After all, she needed to make up for the losses she had incurred today, and there was no better way to do that than by taking on a new patient and earning a hefty fee.
[Doctor Celestial Grace]:"Once again, Ghost Hand disappears without a trace, leaving me here all alone to be fabulous."
[Ghost Hand]:"Goodbye."
With a swift reply, Gu Yicing closed the chat window and began thoroughly reviewing the case details of her new assignment.
Ten minutes later, she packed up her laptop and exited the café, heading directly to the patient's location.
The alliance had strict rules: once you accepted a job, no matter the time or place, you had to reach the patient as soon as possible.
Her destination this time: Mei Se nightclub.
The deafening music from the club filled the air, vibrating through the walls and floor. Inside the dimly lit space, bodies swayed and danced to the beat, lost in the wild rhythms of the night.
Gu Yicing grimaced, covering her ears as she weaved through the throngs of partygoers. Eventually, she made her way to a private room, pushing the door open to enter.
Inside, the contrast between the loud chaos of the club and the tense atmosphere in the private room was palpable. The dim lighting highlighted a group of people gathered around a man lying on the couch, pale and unconscious.
Without hesitation, Gu Yicing set her laptop down and calmly approached the patient. The task details hadn't mentioned the nature of the emergency, but as she assessed the scene, her mind immediately shifted into professional mode.
Another mission had begun, and there was no room for mistakes.
