The eyeless snow porcupine emerged from the snow pits with a thunderous roar, startling Kyora.
"What will it take to kill this porcupine?!" Kyora yelled, wiping sweat from her brow as she took in the creature's massive size.
Suddenly, the porcupine demonstrated why it was called a porcupine: enormous ice spikes sprouted from its back, glittering against the snowy backdrop.
"It's just gotten worse!" Kyora cried, watching the beast grow even more menacing.
Yumiko exuded a newfound bravery and approachability, her twin blades held securely beneath her stomach and behind her hip. With determination, she stepped forward, her boots crunching into the snow, and then lunged into a rapid dash. The sheer velocity of her movement created a whirlwind in her wake.
As she closed the distance, Yumiko sprang high into the air, her blades raised above her head. A surge of blue energy radiated from the weapons, illuminating the scene. At the peak of her leap, she was eye-level with the tallest spike of the enormous snow porcupine.
Simultaneously, Nathaniel raced across the snow-covered ground, skillfully reloading his pistol without breaking stride.
In mid-air, Yumiko observed the porcupine bending forward. Its spines angled skyward, it unleashed a barrage of spikes, each one aimed directly at her, intending to pierce her as she soared above.
Fate did not favor the porcupine. Yumiko's breathtaking speed and unparalleled agility made it effortless for her to slice through the
incoming spikes, deflecting them back or severing them mid-air.
Seizing the opportunity to strike, Yumiko launched herself toward the porcupine, diving into its spines with the precision of a drill. She shredded through the quills, cutting them clean from its body, until she reached its tail. She then landed gracefully on
the icy floor, sliding back to create some distance.
As the porcupine roared in agony, its cries echoed through the frigid air. In that very moment, Nathaniel unleashed a relentless barrage of bullets, executing rapid, acrobatic parkour maneuvers as he encircled the beast.
The bullets inflicted some damage on the snow porcupine, causing it to stagger momentarily.
But then, something completely unexpected happened. Tarot, often regarded as the silliest member of the crew, spotted a weak point.
"That's it! I've got it!" Tarot exclaimed, a grin spreading across his face as he prepared to strike, keeping his next move a mystery to the others.
Tarot exhaled white clouds, summoning one of his duplicates. With a swift motion, he spun his spyglass until it transformed into a staff. Stepping forward, he hurled it with precision, the staff whizzing towards the porcupine's midsection.
The others watched, bewildered, as the staff puffed into smoke. Tarot leaped through the smoke, seamlessly swapping places with his duplicate.
The staff, now searing with orange flames, was in his grasp. With a powerful spin and full force, he slammed the blazing staff into the porcupine's frozen heart, the impact echoing loudly as it melted through the icy barrier.
The porcupine let out a final roar as Tarot's fiery staff struck its core. The intense heat melted the ice surrounding its heart, causing the beast to stagger.
Yumiko seized the moment, slashing at its legs, while Nathaniel circled and fired precise shots into its weakened spots. The combined effort overwhelmed the porcupine, and it collapsed onto the icy floor.
Yumiko zipped across the ice beside Tarot, spinning to a stop with her swords spread wide.
"Awesome work, Tarot! That stagger gave us the chance to take down this giant porcupine! I didn't think you had it in you to figure out its weak point."
Tarot scratched behind his ears, smiling sheepishly. "Hearing that from you is like finding a rare golden peach."
Yumiko rolled her eyes and sighed, dispersing her blades into blue sparkles.
Nathaniel joined the team just as Kyora emerged from her hiding spot. "You've all grown since we last met. Your crew is getting stronger," he said. Nathaniel holstered his gun and grabbed his suitcase.
Nathaniel continued, "But we don't have much time to rest. The factory is somewhere in this cold area, and it might be closer than we think." He looked out over the icy landscape, where the shallow sun illuminated the icebergs and snow-covered hills.
"Everyone," Joker interjected, drawing their attention. "I have a theory that might explain the factory's location. It seems unlikely that it would be on the surface given the harsh conditions. It's more plausible that it's underground, where it's warmer and more habitable for the workers—perhaps in a cave or a similar structure."
The crew exchanged glances, but Joker's theory gave them a solid lead to investigate the nearest underground area.
"You have a point, Joker," Elliott conceded, contemplating their next move. "But this side of the island is massive... Finding a single cave might be impossible..." His voice trailed off, his motivation waning as he considered the dangers ahead.
Yumiko crossed her arms, resting her chin on her right hand. "Actually... it might not be that hard to find," she said, reigniting hope among her friends about locating their destination: the factory.
Nathaniel poked inside her thoughts, "What's your idea, Yumiko?" he questioned, letting her explain what she had in mind.
"You see..." she began, drawing the crew's attention. "Factories like the one we're looking for need a steady energy source and protection from the elements. This island is harsh on the surface, but underground, there are geothermal vents. These vents provide natural warmth and could easily power a factory."
She paused, gauging their reactions before continuing. "Plus, caves are easier to defend and hide, making them perfect for a facility that doesn't want to be found. If we look for signs of geothermal activity or unusual warmth in the ice, we might find the entrance."
Elliott sweated in confusion, wanting to understand how Yumiko figured that out. "How on earth do you know so much about underground elements? Have you studied exploration underground or something?"
Yumiko shook her head and met his perplexed gaze. "No, it's just logistical," she replied. "Think about it—factories need a stable environment and a reliable energy source. Geothermal vents provide both. Plus, being underground protects the facility from the harsh surface conditions and makes it easier to hide. It just makes sense."
Elliott wiped his brow, still baffled. "Seriously, Yumiko... Have you been secretly moonlighting as a mole or something?"
Elliott's eyes widened comically. "And how is that logistical? Man, I'm out here thinking you're part mole, part scientist, and you're telling me it's just common sense? Well, color me impressed and a little jealous. I can barely find my clothes half the time!"
Nathaniel, usually serious and less talkative, seemed fascinated for once and shared in their surprise. "The point here is, Yumiko has good instincts about the factory's whereabouts. Everything she said is realistic and makes sense. So, let's look for it underground. Just search for a warmer part of the snow biome, and we'll be on the right track."
Elliott gave a mock salute, grinning. "Got it, Captain Mole! Warmer snow it is!"
The crew, with their spirits lifted, set off to find the hidden factory.
