Chapter 22

“Okay, we’ve had enough of you blowing smoke,” Lanta said. “Go open the door, Mom. I’ve got this.”

Frieda seemed determined to stop them from getting further. She spread out her legs, hands on hips, and said they’d have to go through her to get to the door.

“Works for me.” Lanta said.

Bernadette let out a giggle. “Go for it, baby. She’s just asking to be run down by a lesbian in a wheelchair.”

Gertrude glanced up at Lanta, then over to Bernadette and back again at her friend. “I don’t understand. How does your mother know—”

“Don’t worry, honey,” Bernadette said to Gertrude. “You’ve got friendly company here. More than you can imagine.” Then she hurried off toward the main entrance.

“Bernadette. Mother. Mom!”

She turned back. “What, honey?”

“What did you mean by more than you can imagine?”

“Oh, that. It’s okay. I’ll explain later when we get home. I should have told you long ago. It’s time now.”

“Do you know what your mother’s talking about?” Gertrude asked.
