So painful were those moments When the earth shook and the seas rose How cheerful life could stand still As though everything was killed All the happiness gone once for all That seemed to me a painful fall Everything I knew wiped away All I could hear was the deafening silence All I could feel was emptiness As if everything was shrouded in darkness All I could hear was my sister crying in madness Adapted from Farah Sherazi's Destruction, Death and Decay.

Chapter 27: Last Morning at Red River

Raziel woke up early the following morning despite sleeping very late. His headache had subsided. He started to pack the clothes in the wardrobe into the travelling bag. When he was done packing, he walked into the bathroom to clean himself up. He thought about what happened with Betty last night. He didn't think the Vice-Admiral would like it if he slept with his maid. It's probably best to avoid situations like last night.

The day was already bright when he walked into the sitting room. It was raining heavily. That's because they were in the first week of march.

Raziel noticed Betty was moving around the kitchen and guessed she was trying to cook something. He thought better of going there to assist her.

The television was switched on. It was showing the early morning new. Raziel sat and relaxed on the couch. Nothing important was being reported on the news.

He began to think. If Vice-Admiral Rowland was the strongest in Nicaorh, why has he not been made the Admiral? It was probably politics. The world may have changed, but politics still runs the world.

He began to think on how to go about his advancement to level 2. After yesterday's training, he could feel he was at the peak of level 1 already. He guessed after a year of being in level 1, he had accumulated enough energy.

The fights and beatings he had received a few days ago must have helped refine his energy.

He decided to hunt an animal for his advancement. There are always animals roaming around every part of Nicaorh since there were forests everywhere in it.

The smell of fried eggs wafted into the sitting room. It made Raziel hungry. He couldn't resist and stood up to go into the kitchen only to see Vice-Admiral Rowland walking into the sitting room.

The Vice-Admiral came and sat down on the other end of the couch.

Raziel said to him, "Good morning sir."

The Vice-Admiral grunted in response and continued staring at the television.

Raziel was confused about what to do and stood there in silence.

After a few minutes of silence, Vice-Admiral Rowland finally opened his mouth. Without looking up at Raziel, he said, "I got you a job as a police officer in the capital. You'll be working as a detective. It wasn't easy getting that job for you. In order for you to keep the job, you have to advance to level 2 in a month's time.

"Make use of your position to carry out the assignment I gave you. I would have gotten you a job at the intelligence agency but it would be too suspicious."

Vice-Admiral Rowland's stomach rumbled. He looked towards the kitchen, "Ask Betty to bring my food already."

Raziel was surprised when he heard the Vice-Admiral's stomach rumble. Due to how powerful the Vice-Admiral was, he guessed he had been treating him like a god. In the end, he is human like himself. The incident gave him a little boost of confidence.

He went to the kitchen and met Betty done with cooking. He greeted her, "Good morning. Thanks for yesterday night."

Betty replied without any expression on her face, "It was nothing. Take the bread and eggs and give the Vice-Admiral's portion to him."

Raziel wondered why there was no awkwardness between them due to what almost happened yesterday night. If she felt anything, she sure as hell knows how to control her expression.

He picked up the plates of food and went back to the sitting room. He placed the Vice-Admiral's food on a table before him. He went back to his room while carrying his own food.

He sat on his bed and started to eat. After filling his stomach, he decided to take a nap.

He had barely slept for five minutes when he heard Betty shout asking him to pick up his travelling bag and leave the house

He got up and stretched his body. It's time for a new chapter in his life. He checked if his durag was tied properly in the mirror and carried his travelling bag. Without hesitation he left the room and went outside.

The three of them got into a car in which Raziel drove. He drove the car to a helipad according to Vice-Admiral Rowland instructions.

The trio got into a chopper which took off instantly. It was Raziel's first time getting into a chopper. The view from up was fascinating to him.

He saw the destroyer ship where it all started and his mind wandered to Commander Carol. He had not seen her since he left the destroyer ship. He wondered where she was now. She spared his life on Jack's boat and he never thanked her.
