Latifa's POV
A week and few days had gone by since I received the news I was getting married. It was a surprise to me however I had come to accept my fate.
Some people might see me as crazy, but the truth is I knew I'd get married one day, I also knew it'll be a stroke of luck to get married out of love hence the word 'love' was buried deep down in my dictionary.
The thought of getting married to Garett Jay Evans scared me more than marriage itself. It was only normal for me to feel that way judging by our history and the circumstances surrounding him.
In the days that followed the bomb of information, we had met up a few times to discuss certain things and try to get to know each other a bit.
Due to our busy schedule we mostly discussed this during the duration of a flight I was working with. He had developed the habit of booking 2 seats, one reserved for me to settle in after my usual flight rounds.
Most times I questioned his jealous behavior and wondered if there was something else to it. At times he turned out to be too grumpy and possessive whenever I was paying a male passenger attention regardless of age or appearance.
It got to a point where I had to scold him openly to the surprise of everyone on board the First Class cabin. This led to some murmurs and a few of them wondering the nature of our relationship.
No one at the airline or around me knew of our relationship, even Clarisse. She knew I was getting married, nonetheless I'd never gotten around to tell her who I was engaged to and she hadn't asked though it was certain she was curious.
The doorbell resounded through the apartment, alerting my attention.
"Latifa! Your fiancée is here!" I heard Clarisse call out after.
In a haste to see her reaction when she opens the door, I quickly gave myself a once over in the mirror and nodded. My floor length blue and black butterfly-styled dress screamed 'ready to meet the parents.'
Hurriedly, I snatched my black Gucci bag that went with my favorite black stilettos and dashed out of the room. I entered the living room just in time for Clarisse to turn the handle.
"Welcome and it's a pleasure to meet__" Her words died as soon as Garett walked into our apartment.
He towered over her petite figure, his hair perfectly styled, green eyes shining and lips tilted at an amused angle at her surprised outlook. "Hello Clarisse, Tifa has told me a lot about you."
Clarisse stood frozen as she peered up at him, her jaw almost sweeping the ground. Her brown eyes slowly shifted from Garett to me and then back to Garett. Her mouth closed and opened as if to speak but nothing seemed to be coming out.
"Is she okay?" Garett questioned, pointing at my bestfriend who stood rooted to the ground in loose red shorts and a blue tank top.
"She's fine," I answered and strolled to pinch her cheek. "Sorry I didn't tell you earlier, I never really got around to."
She bobbed her head in response and stepped away from the door. "I'm happy for you, however I always knew your crazy lifestyle would come biting you in the ass one day and here it is."
*******
"She is not fit to join this family," his mom, a red haired middle aged woman with eyes like her son's said.
Dinner with the parents had appeared to be going well, or so I thought. I watched quietly as she dabbed her lips with a napkin as carefully as possible and sat up, her busty figure in a black dress, the same design as mine pressed into the table as she leaned forward to drop the napkin.
"Why saying so mother?" Garett inquired, not the least bit taken aback or surprised by her statement. "You are the one who set this whole thing up. Now I agree, you change your mind?"
"She has to," his father, Jo Evans, a gruff looking man with sand colored hair and grey eyes agreed. Now I understood where Garett got his usual grumpy trait from. "Behind every action there's a reason."
"What's the reason then?" I asked, their eyes shifting to me in surprise.
"It's good that you are the one who asked Latifa," his father smiled and leaned back in his chair. His fingers brushed away the food crumbs that found their way on the crisp blue shirt, he donned above black pants. "I admire your bravery."
"Pride comes before a fall they say," his mother chipped in and grabbed her phone from beside her empty plate. She played around with it for some seconds before she slid the device across the table to me. "Here."
"What's that?" Garett was the first to grab the phone and frowned at the screen. I peeped over his shoulder, a tad confused till I read what was written below what seemed to be a blurred photo of someone whom I had no doubt was me beside a photo of Garett.
"Star hostess of Universal Airlines is confirmed to be engaged to our young and hardworking minister of foreign affairs," I read out, however the headlines wasn't the issue it was the content under it.
"Rumors have been flying about the Minister of Foreign Affairs being engaged, however what throws the audience off is the fact his future bride is Miss Latifa. After winning the star hostess title for 3 years, it's no secret she gives certain favors to certain passengers."
"It is also rumored among passengers and co-workers that Miss Latifa and our Minister Garett Jay Evans were missing for about an hour during a flight, weeks ago."
"We don't need to explain to you what this means, now the question is, was this before their engagement or aft__"
"Is this the reason you want us to call this off Mom, Dad?" Garett questioned both parents while I shamefully stared at my fingers in my lap.
Clarisse was right, my way of life no matter how justifiable I tried to make it was a mess and a sinful experience. Just like she had said, it had definitively come to bite me in the ass.
Before my pride could stop me, I lifted my weight off the chair and stepped aside. Garett narrowed his eyes at me but it was already late as I dropped to my knees in front of them.
"I'm sorry Mr and Mrs Evans," I apologized, my head bowed low. "I know this will in no way make up for my past behavior and reputation. Nonetheless I assure you here and now that I will spend the rest of my life living a good and honorable life."
"Not for myself alone but for my husband, his family and my future children," I said in one breath. "Please accept me as your daughter-in-law."
