From the Shadows

In short, this is an attempt at a story about Tony Stark getting back in time after using the Infinity Stones. I recently saw a story with a similar premise on this site which made me remember that I wrote this looooong ago. It is one of my very old drafts. I wrote this about a year ago and it was 'gathering dust', unfinished with me having no motivation to continue. I decided to just post whatever was already written in hopes it would provide someone with an enjoyable evening. It is a better alternative than me just deleting it, no? I'll give you a fair warning. The probability of encountering grammatical mistakes is fairly high as I don't feel like proofreading an old draft of mine. As for the cringe name... it is what it is :). The story has exactly 85 chapters written and I will be posting 4 per week because of course I can't just dump it here all at once. Where would be the fun in that? Enjoy.

Ch65. All-seeing?

Three days passed peacefully with Tony and Natasha enjoying their days to the fullest.

Much to Natasha's surprise, Tony didn't get into his research frenzy when he got the blood. He just stored it and started making some gadgets because...

'I wanna fight against the Destroyer and if I can't do it with my body, I will just do it with my mind!'

He told her. Apparently, being left out from the Harlem outing made the big baby a bit sulky even if he didn't let it show. Natasha almost cooed at how adorable that was!

Of course, she had to preserve her big boy's fragile ego so outwardly she didn't let her thoughts show and allowed him to do what he wanted.

Tony wasn't much inclined to study Hulk's blood for now. Not when he knew from JARVIS about Natasha being smacked through half of the Harlem by Abomination.

When she came back, the very first thing he did was to force her onto a bed while JARVIS called Helen Cho and Hannah from their rooms to come and check on Natasha.

Fortunately, nothing was broken and only her muscles were a bit bruised. In any other situation, that would have boosted Tony's ego to heaven's come since the enchanted nanobot clothes were much thinner than the Iron Man armor but sustained a direct punch from Hulk-like entity better than even the armor.

But he was still a bit too spooked from the knowledge Natasha went through several houses. No matter how much he trusted his inventions and magic, he loved Natasha too much not to worry.

He definitely did not want something like that to happen in the fight against Destroyer so he decided in a bout of his usual manliness that he would take care of Destroyer himself and protect his girl.

And he didn't accept any objections!

That's why he was mostly occupied by creating his weapons of Destroyer-slaying in these past three days while spending the remainder of his time with Natasha.

They even tried to learn a new cookie recipe... but it ended with them and most of the kitchen covered in flour when another flour fight broke out.

This time, however, it was somehow turned into a steamy session of messy kitchen hanky-panky. Natasha's hair full of flour was as hilarious as it was sexy and Tony sporting chocolate cream all over his face didn't help the matter at all.

Now that session of their joint cooking was a picture-perfect example of successful failure.

...

Tony and Natasha sat in a restaurant in Puente Antiguo, the town where the Destroyer would show up, and were enjoying some spicy food.

It was nothing exceptionally good since the place was basically just your everyday below-average family restaurant but the town was really just a hicksville of a sort. There was nothing in there so both Tony and Natasha were simply happy to have a place where they could spend time while waiting.

"Are you sure this is safe?" Natasha asked, masking her worry.

Tony's plan was solid but she would prefer not to make an enemy out of Asgard if it could be helped.

Normally, she would have called it insane but Tony preferred innovative...

"Yup. I would have never done something like this if Thor was not such an idiot, Nat. Don't worry." Tony replied, not bothering to lower his voice to prevent eavesdropping since there was an invisible magical barrier around their table.

Natasha nodded. She knew how... straightforward Thor could be. He was not exactly stupid but he simply didn't care to learn about something he was not interested in. He was like a manchild with a lot of potential but no will to become better.

She really wasn't afraid of Thor, of all people, discovering Tony's ploy.

Besides, Tony usually knew what he was doing but..."And Heimdal? Wasn't he supposed to be all-seeing?"

That was what bothered her. The man was supposed to be able to see everything. It would be very troublesome if what they were about to do was discovered.

"Pfft. All-seeing, my ass!" Tony snickered at the notion. "That is just an unfounded over-inflated legend. I have no idea if it is intentional or not but Heimdal's abilities are described only in a very general sense that doesn't mention his limitations at all. Because of that, he seems more powerful than he actually is. In reality, he is pretty disappointing, really..." He wryly said.

Seeing that Natasha still did not get the picture, he decided to enlighten his little padawan. "To put it into a perspective, imagine Heimdal to be some kind of scope with a range spanning galaxies. He has the ability to see almost everything in his range that is not obscured by special means but he can only look at one place at a time. Hence, he is not, in fact, all-seeing. I'd rather call it far-seeing, to be honest."

Tony added a mocking snort after he finished his sentence. Really, the legends were making him seem like some kind of omniscient entity but that couldn't be further from the truth.

"You and your technicalities..." Natasha rolled her eyes, not really caring about Heimdal's abilities. It didn't matter if he could see only one place at a time. Thor was here so Natasha could guess where will Heimdal's eyes be fixed at. "I am more interested if your wards will really do their jobs and prevent him from seeing the fight." She grumbled, sticking her fork into her food.

"Your confidence in me is duly noted." Tony pitifully stated before his expression turned smug, "Of course, they will! They are MY wards!"

Natasha dryly sighed, giving Tony an unimpressed look. "God help us, then. I am suddenly feeling a lot less sure about this."

"Hmm..." Tony hummed before grinning, "Which God? Because both Loki and Thor will be helping us even though they will have no idea about it."

'Ah, yes. There is that.' Natasha's lips twitched.

Tony's plan was to trick Thor... which would be fine... and Loki. Really, what could go wrong with that, right?

The latter of the two was supposed to be a God of Trickery so that didn't inspire much confidence in Natasha. But Tony was adamant that their supposed legendary divine origins are just that... legends.

Tony never acknowledged Thor's Godhood, not even in their past, and now he found his proof in the old dusty archives of Kamar Taj. Real gods had to have something called divinity, apparently.

Tony was acting like a kid for an entire week after he discovered that the Asgardians did not possess it. Hence, they were just a powerful race of aliens who once upon a time visited Earth and got worshipped by the local populace because of their powers.

Now, that opened an entirely new and scary can of worms. Natasha thought Asgardians and Thanos would be quite high on the power ladder but... actual Gods?

What the heck? Those were supposed to be real too?

After a few days of pondering about it, Natasha decided to forget it for now. It wasn't important to worry about their existence. She doubted she will see one in her life. ... Right?

Nevertheless, that still didn't make Loki any easier to fool. The man had centuries of experience.

Then again, this was Tony Stark being serious about something so Loki was pretty much fucked.

She just didn't want to show her confidence in Tony because his head was big enough as it was. She didn't even want to imagine how much his ego will grow once he manages to pull a wool over the eyes of the whole Asgard.

Well, he will either manage to pull it off or there would be a shitton of trouble coming their way.

Author Note:

Yeah, some of you might complain that Heimdal is frozen by Loki at this period of time so he can't do anything anyway but Tony and Natasha do not know that.
