CHAPTER 31: Curiosity Killed The Cat

Vance glanced up from his paperwork as I entered his office, his usual easy smile replaced by a curious frown. "Evie, good morning. You alright?"

"Fine," I said, a touch too sharply. "Just a bit overwhelmed with everything." My face felt hot just thinking about what I'd just done merely hours before arriving at the office.

He chuckled, a dry sound devoid of amusement. "Tell me about it. Emily has got me running in circles today. She's currently in the boss's office, trying to convince him to sign off on a proposal so at least I'll have some minutes of peace unless her evil twin Sarah shows up with her demands."

Vance's words sparked a flicker of annoyance and it was understandable because both Emily and Sarah were not people that anyone wanted to work with.

Ignoring the unwelcome pang in my chest at the mention of Alexander, I forced a smile.

"How about I bring you some coffee to cheer you up?" I offered and Vance nodded with a smile.

  "Thank you. You're the best."
