[George's POV]
"What will you be eating later?"
"Why do you care?'
"I don't really care. I'm just curious."
My heart was pounding so loud now that I started to wonder if she could hear it.
"Meat."
Meat?!
My voice started to tremble.
"What kind of meat? Where are you getting it from?"
"Does it matter to you?"
"I'd like to think so."
I walked to the edge of the cliff to see how far down it was.
"What are you doing?"
The girl called out sharply from where she was looking at something in her hand.
"I'm just looking at nature. Don't mind me."
"Don't go too far. I still have use for you."
"Yeah, yeah."
I stood at the very edge of the cliff and looked down. I immediately regretted that decision, as I felt dizzy as soon as I did so.
I teetered and fell back the way I came from.
Looking up at the clear, blue sky with hardly a cloud in sight and I felt an irresistible urge to shout.
So I did.
"AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"
"Ahh!"
A smaller scream came from where the girl was standing.
"What the hell are you doing?!"
"Pfttt."
I couldn't help but laugh at her scream that sounded sort of cute.
She ran towards me and threw her knife.
It landed next to me and I pulled it out hurriedly and pointed it at her.
"Ha, I have the power now. Stay where you are. I'll be taking your life now."
"Are you sure about that?"
To my surprise, there was another knife in her hand.
"Huh? How did you...."
She spun it around on her finger.
"You really are stupid. Didn't you think that you might have had a knife too?"
"Now that you say it, it actually makes sense. So, are you going to kill me?"
"Unfortunately for you, I am. It seems you're a little too eager to survive. What happened to not caring?"
I exclaimed, exasperated myself.
"That's what I would like to know! I shouldn't care, but it's like my will to survive kicks in from time to time."
She gave me a weird look.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Don't ask me!"
"Why am I even arguing with you? It's time for you to die."
She charged at me while I watched and wondered if I should dodge or not.
Can I even dodge? She's in Group 22. That gap is big.
But at the last moment, my survival instinct kicked in like it always does and I rolled to the side and jumped up to my feet.
But this girl wasn't in Group 22 for no reason. She altered her course and stabbed me.
I had to applaud her ability to adapt, but there's one thing she forgot to consider. We were currently on a cliff, and I had been dangerously close to its edge. Maybe she's not scared of heights, so that's why she was okay with falling with me off the cliff.
We both fell at high speeds and clung to each other. Every moment felt like an eternity as we fell towards the river below us. The wind blowing against my face and getting in my eyes forced me to close them. I flailed around in the breeze and tried to grab something.
When my arm snagged against something, I didn't hesitate to grab it and hold on with all my strength. My arm felt like it would snap because of the way it was suddenly stopped in the middle of motion, but I desperately held on for dear life.
The girl wrapped herself around my body and didn't loosen her grip. I opened my eyes to find that it was a tree branch that I had caught on to. However, it was rapidly cracking and breaking from all the weight it wasn't meant to hold.
I tried to shake the girl off, but that just caused the branch to lean out further. I stopped in fear of falling. I normally should have been panicking because of the distance I was from the ground and the danger I was in, but my mind was calm and already working out how to escape from this. Maybe it was the influence of my non-caring self?
I eventually decided to look for holes in the cliffside to serve as footholds and handholds. I found some and leaned my body towards them from their dangling position. But it was no easy feat as the girl (I never found out her name) was still clinging to me like germs.
I eventually was able to get a grip just as the branch broke. I would have started to climb but the extra weight made that impossible. With no choice left, I banged my body against the cliff in order for her to lose her grasp.
Even though I was trying to get her off me, I was still in danger of falling myself. But still, I persisted. While the winds blew and howled in my ears, I kept banging the cliff like it was the last thing I would do. I was banking on her falling before I did, but I was a very risky gamble. I was already getting tired, it wasn't as if I had ever practiced mountain climbing before.
Eventually, (I got tired of calling her 'the girl' so she will be Girl from now on) Girl hissed at me.
"What do you think you're doing?"
I paused for a moment then went back to the task at hand.
"What does it look like? I'm trying to get you off me. I'm going to fall at this rate."
"You don't think I know that? Stay still for a moment, and I'll get off you."
Really? That was easier than I thought it would be. Is she actually an agreeable person?
She gradually shifted her body until she was against the wall and then she inserted her hands and feet into the holes she found.
While she was doing that, I had a genius idea.
Why don't I kick her off before she gains her poise back?
