Applying and new mission

The rest of the afternoon went by, and Anna performed everything flawlessly, not making a single mistake.

"Well, if Ayame didn't need to step in, you have the job." In a small study, Tomoe sat at a desk with glasses on, looking through some papers.

"Yes!" Anna clenched her fist and, without thinking about it, hugged Ayame, who was next to her.

"Haha, g-good job Anna." Ayame struggled to speak as Anna hugged her a little too tight, but she didn't want to say anything as this was her first ever embrace from someone other than Tomoe.

"Oops, sorry." Anna quickly pulled away as she noticed that Ayame was getting squished.

"Pffhaha, you two got close quickly, and don't worry, she was enjoying it." Tomoe pointed behind Ayame, and Anna looked.

Ayame turned her body so Anna wouldn't see, and she kept turning as Anna tried to get behind her.

Tome flicked her hand up, and suddenly blue flames arose from the ground and trapped Ayame, allowing Anna to see. It turned out Ayame's tail had come out and was wagging the entire time during the hug.

Turning her head and blushing, she felt betrayed by her own body and Tomoe, who restrained her in flames.

"Hehe~." Anna stood in front of Ayame with a grin as the rather serious-looking Ayame was just an ordinary girl.

"Anyway, Anna, you should head home before it's too dark." Tomoe smiled happily to see Ayame was making friends and felt terrible as she sheltered her almost all her life.

'She is no longer that lonely little fox, no need to be so protective anymore.' Tomoe shook her head as it was hard to accept Ayame going to university at first, but seeing her get along with Anna made Tomoe more confident in her decision.

"Oh yes, I will see you tomorrow?" Anna quickly straightened up as she still wanted to act somewhat professionally.

"Mhm, it will be a busy week, so make sure you are here early in the morning." Tomoe flicked her hand again, releasing Ayame while telling Anna her schedule.

"Alright, thank you, I'll see you guys tomorrow." Anna did a slight bow and left with a smile while also waving at Ayame.

After waiting for Anna to leave, Tomoe stood up, approaching Ayame and wrapping her arm around Ayame's shoulders.

"So, do you like her?" Tomoe had a smug grin while she poked Ayame on the cheek.

"I know exactly where you are going with this, and no, I do not "like" her. She is my first friend, and I want to keep it as just friends." Ayame wasn't interested in any romance as it would be too dangerous, let alone see her becoming more of a little sister than a partner.

"I'm only playing, plus I wouldn't let you since she has an arranged marriage with another family." Tomoe walked back to her desk as she was finished trying to tease Ayame.

"Oh, I see. I hope she is okay with it." Ayame felt terrible for Anna as she was told it was common amongst the other families to marry to preserve the kitsune race.

"I wouldn't know, but that isn't our problem." Tomoe didn't think about it too much and began to type on a laptop. She then turned it around so Ayame could see what was on the screen.

"You have a new mission tomorrow night to take out a CEO who has been doing some deals with an unknown entity. Need you to see who it is and assassinate the CEO after the meeting."

"So soon?" Ayame was a bit surprised. Usually, there would be a week between the missions, but it must be urgent, which was probably why Tomoe quickly changed the subject.

"Yes, this you must not let yourself get seen otherwise, it will cost you your life as we don't know how powerful this unknown person is." Tomoe pushed up her glasses, hinting back at the photo that was captured of her by a passerby.

"I-I will make sure to be extra careful, plus I know how serious this is." Ayame felt sweat go down her back as she felt the cold stare through Tomoe's glasses.

"Good, now make sure you rest up. Anna was hired to relieve some of your duties so take full advantage of that." Tomoe leaned back into her chair while pressing enter on her laptop to forward the message to Ayame.

"Alright, guess I'll go prepare some things then." Opening up her uniform, she pulled out her phone from her chest and saw the notification from Tomoe.

"Don't forget to look into some courses. You will need to start soon." Returning to her usual relaxed self, the tension in the room fell.

"Yes, I know." Waving her hand, she exited the study and headed for her room just down the hall.

Walking inside her room which was relatively normal, she had a desk in the corner with her laptop, a bed, a closet and a shelf full of books. The shelf contained some manga and some books related to her assassin training.

Getting changed into a black t-shirt and some shorts, she let her fox traits free, allowing her to relax as she felt the most natural this way.

Sitting at her desk, she opened up her laptop and began to look for different courses.

'Good thing the uni is super close, so I don't need to travel far.' Ayame found that there was a university that was a 15-minute walk away. It was also the central university of Alenia, named after the city she was in.

Scrolling through the different categories, Ayame struggled to pick a topic she was interested in as most things were boring to her.

The only thing that was catching her eye was psychology and chemistry courses, as it was something she could apply to her assassinations.

'I think I will go with psychology first and take some chemistry side classes.' Clicking on the psychology course, it outlined the course as well as the price for it.

"40k!!! That's how much I get from one simple job, but even then, I don't even get the money." Ayame hit her head on the desk as she didn't know how Tomoe had the money since most of it went to the shrine rent and upkeep, which was extremely expensive.

'Well, at least I'm not paying, and it seems like fun.' Thinking about having to go to class and meet people, she got a little excited as this would be her first time leaving the shrine for something other than assassinations.

'I should ask Anna what she thinks. It seems like she has more experience with this sort of stuff.' Thinking back to how Anna was more a part of human society, I thought it might be a good idea to ask her how things worked.

'I mean, I'm not completely under a rock. I still go out with Tomoe now and again.' Ayame felt a little stupid, although she has gone out in the city and is well aware of most things. She still felt somewhat detached from the outside world.

'Maybe I'm overthinking, plus the internet has been rather useful in knowing what people are doing anyway.' Ayame looked at her phone, which had most social media on it, but she couldn't help but be skeptical that things would be entirely different once she went to uni.

"Yeaahhh I'll ask Anna tomorrow.' Deciding that it would be better to ask directly from someone rather than base it on what she had seen online.

Pinning the tab for the uni course, she still had time to decide what she wanted to do.

'I guess I should look at the mission details for tomorrow night.' Opening up her emails, she saw the details from Tomoe.

Clicking on it, it redirected her to a different website which gave all the details about the target. Seeing a middle-aged man that ran a successful business, she could tell by his face that he was corrupt.

Scrolling through the page, there were details of the location where he would meet this unknown person.

"So they are meeting in a stadium." Thinking how open it would be believed it would be a horrible idea to do a meeting here, but realised it would be ideal as there would be nowhere to hide.

'My conceal spell should be enough, plus I need to take out the target after the meeting, so I don't need to get close.' Planning out how she would approach, assuming they would use the entryways for the sports teams, figured it would be best to eliminate the target when he goes through it.

'This shouldn't be too hard, but finding out who the unknown person is will be tricker, especially since they seem powerful.' Ayame was worried that she wouldn't be able to find out who it was since it won't be as easy as looking at their face.

'The main mission is the target, so I'm guessing the hire isn't expecting us to find out who it is unless there is an opportunity.' Considering that her main goal was to kill the CEO, she realised she didn't need to risk her life to find out.

Finding this out took off a lot of stress as it was one thing to kill someone, but to find out the identity of someone who isn't even known was rather daunting.

Shutting her laptop after she found out all the information, she looked at the time and figured she would go to sleep.

'There should still be a school rush, so better sleep early.' The exam period was one of the busiest and most profitable times since there were so many students.

Crawling into bed, she hid her tail to make it more comfortable to lay on her back and quickly fell asleep shortly after.
